Please note the following about the wings:

  • The wings in the diagram are raised higher than is usual in most dragonflys. The wings are in an 'inspection' position to allow us a clearer view of the body. Generally both sets of wings are held relatively flat and horizontally against the body, this raised position is more common with a dragonfly in flight. The wings have been shown solely to give a sense of proportion.
  • Although not clear in the diagram, the rear wing of the dragonfly is usually broader at its base where it connects to the lateral sutures of the body compared to the front wings. This means the rear wing is roughly a third the size of the front wing larger than its counterpart. Please see 20px for a clearer example of the wings of a dragonfly.
