Matthew Timothy "Matty" Healy (born 8 April 1989) is an English musician, singer, songwriter and guitarist, best known as the lead singer, guitarist and pianist for the English alternative rock band The 1975.

Early life

Healy was born in London, the son of actress Denise Welch and actor Tim Healy. He was raised in Newcastle upon Tyne before his parents moved to a small village outside of Macclesfield when Healy was 10 years old.[1][2][3] He left school at 16 and worked in call centres, cafés, and Chinese takeaways.[4] His first job was "in a kitchen doing pots at a pub".[5]

Career

In 2001, Healy met his future bandmates — guitarist and keyboardist Adam Hann, drummer and backing vocalist George Daniel, and bassist and backing vocalist Ross MacDonald — at Wilmslow High School in Wilmslow, Cheshire.[2] He states that a "hippy council worker" was putting on gigs for teenagers at Macclesfield Senior Citizen Hall and Hann approached him and MacDonald about forming a band. Healy originally played drums, but switched when George Daniel was added and the lead singer left to join another band.[6]

The 1975 released their debut self-titled album on 2 September 2013. Six days later the album reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. The album had several singles including "Sex", "Girls", "Settle Down", "Robbers", and "Heart Out". The album was recorded with the help of Arctic Monkeys producer Mike Crossey.[7] In an interview, Healy, who writes all the lyrics for the 1975's songs, explains “on the [record] there's elements of emo and ambient music, which is what I was listening to from 15–20"[8]

The 1975 released their second album, I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It, on 26 February 2016 through Dirty Hit Records.[8]

Personal life

Healy is an atheist and humanist; he is a patron of the British Humanist Association.[9]

Healy dated English model Gemma Janes for about two years; they broke up in 2014 but are still good friends. [10]
