Saravanan Meenatchi (Tamil: சரவணன் மீனாட்சி) is a Tamil Romance soap opera that airs on STAR Vijay. The show premiered on 7 November 2011. It airs Monday through Friday evenings at 8.30PM IST. It stars Mirchi Senthil, Sreeja Chandran, Ratchitha, and Kavin. The name of the serial is derived from the names of the characters of the serial 'Madurai' starring the same lead pair. The serial is directed by Azhagar, and the story, screenplay and dialogues are by Kadhiravan. The series completed its 1000th episode on 18 September 2015.

The program was awarded 'Best Serial', 'Best Male Actor', 'Best Female Actor', 'Best Director' and 'Best Character Actor' at the 43rd annual awards function organized by Mylapore Academy.

Season two was also awarded 'Best Male Actor' to Kavin 'Best Female Actor' to Rachitha 'Best Comedian' to Nandhini 'Best Director' to praveen Bennett' and 'Best Serial' at Vijay Television Awards 2015.

Plot summary

The story revolves around Saravanan and Meenatchi — who are poles apart in terms of personality, background, attitudes towards life, etc. Saravanan is a Chennai-based Radio Jockey from an affluent family. Meenatchi is a small-town girl from Thirunelveli, working as a teacher in a small school. The story begins as the two families meet for a marriage proposal between the two, but things go wrong and the wedding does not happen. However, Saravanan and Meenatchi find themselves falling in love with each other.

The season 2 begins with Shakthi Saravanan son of Saravanan and Meenatchi comes to India from Canada to find a bride like his Mom. He comes to the Village Kallidaikurichi in Tirunelveli where his maternal uncle Tamizh and family live. Shakthi Saravanan disguises himself and lives in Tamizh's house where he meets Tamizh's daughter Thanga Meenatchi and falls for her. After all oppositions from Tamizh ultimately she too falls for Shakthi Saravanan. However Tamizh`s nephew Vettaiyan also heartly loves Thanga Meenatchi. But Tamizh disagrees with Meenatchi and Sakthi Saravanans love. He makes Thanga Meenatchi marry his another sister Sudha's son Saravana Perumal aka Vettaiyan. Saravanan promises to save her from the wedding, Vettaiyan promises not to marry her if Saravanan comes but he doesnt turn up.

So at this point "Saravana" Perumal (Vettaiyan) and Thanga "Meenatchi" get married. Over the time Vettaiyan has saved Meenatchi`s life many times. Vettaiyan`s love grows stronger and Meenatchi likes him more. Vettaiyan makes a promise to Meenatchi that he will take her to Canada. However Sudha has been diagnosed with Brain Tumor, so Vettaiyan and Meentachi act like a couple in front of Sudha as she can not cope with stress and worry. Soon Sudha realized that Meenatchi hasn't accepted Vettaiyan as her husband but Vettaiyan still truly loves Meenatchi. Meenatchi met with an accident and loses her memory. At this point Meenatchi`s family doesn't want her to know anything about her past life. She doesn't even know she is married to Vettaiyan. But she meets Vettaiyan and falls towards him, while all her family members describe him as a tough horrible guy she sees the truth and sees his true personality. She admires the amount of respect he has for others and how caring he is to her. Nevertheless Vettaiyan does not know that Meenatchi has lost her memory, the script shows how Vettaiyan and others find out about her memory loss and bring back happiness and love into her life. The story is about how Thanga Meenatchi finds her love for Vettaiyan and accepts him.

Meenatchi proposes her love to Vettaiyan. Vettaiyan comes to know about Meenatchi's memory loss from Mynaa. Vettaiyan accepts Meenatchi's love proposal. Sudha is unhappy with Meenatchi and Vettaiyan union because she fears that Meenatchi may leave Vettaiyan if she regains from memory loss. Sudha wants Vettaiyan to marry Kalairasi. Vettaiyan stands up with his decision to be with Meenatchi no matter what.Douglas advises Vettaiyan that Meenakshi may stop loving him once her memory is back. Pandi humiliates Lakshmi and Anbarasu for being in an illegal relationship. Vettaiyan comforts Anbarasu and asks him to wed Lakshmi again as they both had a secret marriage. Tulasi is upset with Pandi humiliating Lakshmi. She confides in Vaithi and requests him to perform Anburasu and Lakshmi's wedding. Vaithi seeks Soundarya and Tamizh's approval, but they disapprove. Meanwhile, Vettaiyan tricks Tamizh and ensures that he performs Anbarasu's marriage. Vettaiyan stops Douglas from revealing the truth to Meenakshi about her past. Anbarasu visits Tamizh's house to invite them for his 60th birthday celebrations along with the renewal of marital vows with Lakshmi.

He expresses his wish to invite Sudha and Vettaiyan to the ceremony. Vettaiyan orders Anbarasu to not immediately agree to Vaithi's wish of celebrating his 60th birthday. However, Anbarasu agrees after Vaithi pleads with him. Vettaiyan takes Meenakshi to his house on the pretext of meeting Sudha. Sudha shows her dissatisfaction on Meenatchi. Vettaiyan stops Douglas from revealing the truth to Meenakshi about her past. Anbarasu visits Tamizh's house to invite them for his 60th birthday celebrations along with the renewal of marital vows with Lakshmi. He expresses his wish to invite Sudha and Vettaiyan to the ceremony. Tulasi is happy for uniting Vettaiyan and Meenakshi. Vettaiyan agrees to attend Anbarasu's 60th birthday celebration akin to the renewal of marital vows with Lakshmi, as Meenakshi's threatens to end her relationship with him. Vettaiyan and Meenakshi share a moment of bliss. Tulasi pacifies Vaithi. Pandi's goons attack Anbarasu.

Tulasi is happy for uniting Vettaiyan and Meenakshi. Vettaiyan eats a sumptuous meal prepared by Meenakshi at her house without Tamizh's knowledge. Anubarasu invites Sudha for his 60th birthday party and for the renewal of marital vows but she is hesitant to go. Tamizh sees Vettaiyan-Meenakshi on the terrace and suspects a foul-play, though they act as rivals in front of him. Kalaiarasi confides about her broken relationship with Vettaiyan to her grandfather. Sudha pacifies an enraged Kalaiarasi's grandfather and assures to get Vettaiyan married to Kalaiarasi. Sudha tells Vettaiyan that Kalaiarasi is going to stay in their house. Meenakshi apologises to Sudha and gets upset to learn about Kalaiarasi and Vettaiyan's marriage proposal. Tamizh and Pandi hatch a plot to kill Anubarasu, Lakshmi and Tulasi at Anburasu's 60th birthday party. Vettaiyan sneaks into Meenakshi's room to speak to her as she is upset with him. Meenakshi confronts Vettaiyan about Kalaiarasi's marriage with him and accuses him of cheating her. Vettaiyan comforts Meenakshi and tells her to trust him. Tamizh suspects that Vettaiyan is with Meenakshi and goes to his room to check on him.

Meenakshi kissed Vettaiyan on his forehead as a symbol of her trust and love for him. Douglas tells Vettaiyan that he should reveal the truth to Meenakshi and not deceive her. Meanwhile, Meenakshi waits eagerly for Vettaiyan. Meenakshi takes a drunken Vettaiyan to his room and tends to him. She hides his gold chain and teases him about it. Vettaiyan promises her that he will not drink alcohol without her consent. Anubarasu and Lakshmi visit Tamizh and his family. Anbarasu takes Tamizh and his family shopping in the event of his 60th marriage anniversary. Meenakshi invites Vettaiyan to join them. As the whole family shops together, Vettaiyan and Tamizh tease and make fun of each other. Meenakshi asks Vettaiyan to select a sari for her. Vettaiyan and Meenakshi are stunned as they both select the same kind of sari from different counters. Meenakshi helps Vettaiyan to dress up. They romance over the phone. Vettaiyan is awestruck when Meenakshi fulfill his wish to see her in the dress he brought for her.Vettaiyan is spellbound seeing Meenakshi in a western gown. Vettaiyan-Meenakshi enjoy a moment of bliss as they dance and take a selfie with each other. Pandiyan conspires to kill Anbarasu, Lakshmi and Tulasi all at once. Meenakshi overhears Lakshmi praise and thank Vettaiyan for his help.

Meenakshi praises Vettaiyan for his kind nature. Vaithi, Anbarasu and Tamizh decide to play a round of rummy. Vettaiyan too gains himself an entry to play with Tamizh, Anbarasu and Vaithi. Vettaiyan's winning streak loots everyone. Meenakshi challenges Vettaiyan, to win back the lost money. Sudha is sad as Kalaiarasi professes her love for Vettaiyan. Tamizh opposes to Vettaiyan attending the function. The family members reach the temple and start preparing for Anbarasu's 60th marriage anniversary. Tamizh warns Vettaiyan of his impending downfall. As Anbarasu's 60th marriage anniversary function takes place, Pandi enters the temple. Brandishing a sickle, he orders for the ritual to stop, much to Tamizh's joy. After the function, Meenakshi calls Vettaiyan and asks him to get her flowers to wear on her hair, and the two share a loving moment. Pandi hatches a devious plan to use Meenakshi's memory loss as a way to win her affection. The final ritual for Anbarasu's 60th marriage anniversary is about to begin, as Pandi reveals a sinister plot which put the lives of everyone present there in danger. Sudha realises Vettaiyan's good nature. Anbarasu's 60th anniversary function continues without anyone realising the grave danger they are in.

Meenakshi wants to exchange garlands with Vettaiyan like the other couple in the family but he rebuffs her. Meenakshi sees glimpses of her past while Vettaiyan ties a make believe thali on her neck and she falls unconscious. Myna and Vettaiyan panic as Meenakshi tells them about her visions. Later, Vettaiyan pulls a prank on Tamizh with the help of Myna and Meenakshi. At the temple, Meenakshi wishes to eat from Vettaiyan's leaf, as per the traditions of the Tamil wives of yore. Meanwhile, Pandi comes up with a dangerous plan to kill Anbarasu and his family. In an unanticipated turn of events, Tamizh's family is forced to switch to Anbarasu's vehicle, the one that has Pandi's bomb. Tamizh is agitated on learning about this, making Vettaiyan suspicious. Vettaiyan injured while saving the family. Vettaiyan in a critical condition .The family members are tensed as Vettaiyan is rushed into the emergency room of the hospital. Sudha is shocked by the doctor's diagnosis while Tamizh notices his family worrying about Vettaiyan. The Tamizh household is surprised when the police pay them a visit.

The police get Tamizh's statement and leave, promise the family that the culprits would be caught. Meenakshi plans to visit Vettaiyan at the hospital and asks for Mynaa's help. Finally alone with an unconscious Vettaiyan, she breaks down and gives him an ultimatum. Vettaiyan comes out of coma. His mother and Douglas help him to overcome his disorientation. But tragically, everyone is in for a shock as a horrific complication arises. A heartbroken Meenakshi decides to help Vettaiyan in the only way she knows. Meenakshi undergoes a painful ritual at the temple while praying for Vettaiyan's recovery. Kalaiarasi gets to know of Vettaiyan's predicament, and rushes to the hospital. Once there, Vettaiyan surprises both Douglas and her. Tamizh questions and taunts Vaithi for performing a puja for Vettaiyan's well-being. At the temple, Vaithi bumps into the goon who planted the bomb in their car. He confronts him, but he escapes from his clutches.

Meenakshi is in tears looking at Vettaiyan's condition in the hospital. Sudha consoles Kalaiarasi, assuring her that Vettaiyan's love for Meenakshi will be short-lived. Meenakshi tries to understand Vettaiyan's predicament and carries out an experiment. They share a romantic moment at the hospital. Vettaiyan regains his vision, but doesn't disclose it to the others; He plans to pull a prank on Meenakshi for a few days. Vaithi attacks Pandi, and questions him about the bomb in the car. At the hospital, Rajasekar and Douglas suspect Vettaiyan, and test him to check if he is still blind. Meenakshi stumbles upon her old mangalsutra in her bedroom, which triggers an old memory. She confronts her parents about it. Vettaiyan continues his prank on Meenakshi, but she begins to suspect that he is not blind after all. She decides to test him, to see if he really lost his eyesight. Vettaiyan consoles Meenakshi. Pandi and his men rejoice over Vettaiyan losing his eyesight. Their elation soon subsides as Douglas states that Vettaiyan is not blind. Sudha is surprised as the doctor claims that Vettaiyan is faking his blindness. The doctor plans to make Vettaiyan confesses to his act.

One day, Douglas hires a machine to harvest the crops grown in Vettaiyan's field. Vettaiyan casually driving down the lane sees Douglas and asks him where he is going with a plougher. Douglas tells Vettaiyan that he's going to plough Vettaiyan's land. Vettaiyan gets upset and heartbroken that Douglas did not tell him and how he also wanted to take part. Vettaiyan patches up quickly and when they go to the land they see the crops already harvested and field burning. Furious, heartbroken and crying Vettaiyan and Douglas assume Pandi should be the culprit for the mischief and go to Pandi and have a fight. Anbarasu hears Pandi and Vettaiyan yelling and goes to stop them, in the process he lays his hand on Vettaiyan. They break up the fight immediately and Anbarasu says he saw Kalaiarasi call a few guys and how she was the culprit. Vettaiyan becomes more furious and goes to his home where Kalaiarasi resides. He asks her in front of his mum with whom's consent did you go and harvest the crops. Kalaiarasi becomes heartbroken and tries and explaining that Sudha gave consent.

Kalaiarasi brings 1 lakh from the temple room and hands it Vettaiyan. She also tells Vettaiyan that 106 bags of crops were harvested and Vettaiyan is delighted he won the competition/challenge put against Thamizh. Sudha tells keep 50,000 for daily spending and put the rest of the money in the bank. Vettaiyan goes and buys gold anklets for Meenakshi for 50,000. After several events and Meenakshi getting more closer and fonder to Vettaiyan, Meenakshi gets a letter. She received a letter from Divya, an old friend who she does not recall but did 2 years of MA with. The content of the letter mentioned a Bank Exam they had applied for and how they have a exam due. The letter had the Hall Ticket for the exam. The venue for the exam was in Madurai. Coincidentally, Meenakshi was reading the book related to the subject and managed to convince her father to allow her to attend.

Meenakshi becomes more excited that she will be travelling on her own and if Vettaiyan comes to know about this he will also definitely go for company. When Vettaiyan and Meenakshi arrive Divya's House in Madurai a local resident tells them Divya is not in town as her grandmother passed. The couple are confused in what to do next and have a date/meal together at a roadside shop and decide to sleep at a bus stop. The shop owner advises Vettaiyan to go to a hotel or lodge as there are no bus stops locally and he's travelling with a girl. Vettaiyan eventually finds a lodge but with one room. The receptionist looks at them in a rather queer way as he thinks Meenakshi is an escort. The police call for their monthly check on hotels/lodge and the receptionist says there are a few so called couples here. Police take Vettiayan and Meenakshi to the police station. Not knowing what to do and due to Meenakshi's memory loss Vettaiyan is unable to prove Meenakshi is his wife. For his luck and good character, Thamizh's best friend, Arunachalam attends the station and sees them in such state. Vettaiyan has a private word with Arunachalam to tell him what has happen since the last time they both had met. The two are free to go with full police protection.

Meenakshi attends the exam the next morning and sees Divya. Divya confronts Meenakshi after the exam and asks for her well being. Before Meenakshi let Divya speak further she tells her that she had an accident and lost her memory. Divya feels sorry for her and asks Meenakshi about her 'husband'. Meenakshi gets emotional and was eager to see a picture of him as Divya claims she saw a wedding picture of the two. Volcano erupts at this point. Meenaklshi rejects all Vettaiyan's calls and checks out from the lodge. Vettaiyan catches her up in the Bus back home and sees her still crying. Meenakshi tells him to sit somewhere else and she is furious that Vettaiyan hid the truth about her marriage and is loving another mans wife. Meenakshi gets angry with her family that they betrayed her trust.

Vettaiyan is still confused as to why she is acting in such manner and tries to find the answer the next day.Sudha taunts Vettaiyan for trusting Meenakshi. Douglas and Sudha assure Kalaiarasi that Vettaiyan will return to her. Meenakshi overhears Vettaiyan and Tulasi's conversation. She slaps and rebukes Tulasi for trying to match Vettaiyan with her. Meenakshi is shocked to learn that Vettaiyan is her husband!Tamizh is shocked as Meenakshi questions him for keeping Vettaiyan and her marriage a secret. He creates a dislike for Vettaiyan in Meenakshi's heart. As a result, Meenakshi confronts Vettaiyan. She gives back the thali and ends their marriage.Tamizh emotionally blackmails Soundarya, Vaithi and Tulasi to emphasise his story portraying Vettaiyan as a bad person to Meenakshi. Vettaiyan wonders why Tulasi is acting indifferent. He comes home drunk. Tamizh poisons Meenakshi's mind further against Vettaiyan.

Vettaiyan confronts Meenakshi for avoiding him. Kalaiarasi is wary of Pandi's intention and advises Nalasivam not to help him. Meanwhile, Meenakshi confides in Soundarya, Tulasi and Vaithi that she loves Vettaiyan, but is not sure if he is a good person.Kayal and Kumaresan visit Meenakshi to invite her and Vettaiyan for their child's ear piercing ceremony. Meenakshi's dilemma increases further as Kayal and Kumaresan proclaim that she is blessed to have Vettaiyan as her husband. She is devastated when Sudha requests her to disown Vettaiyan.Vettaiyan refuses to reveal Meenakshi's past and tells her not give importance to it or get carried away by people's accusation against him. He asks her to seek the truth by herself. Meenakshi confides the same in Myna, who advises her on how to find out if she still loves Vettaiyan.

Meenakshi panics on learning that Vettaiyan has been bitten by a snake. She rushes to the spot and cries on finding him dead. Later, she slaps him on learning that he had faked his death to make her realise her love for him. The two reconcile and get remarried in the temple. Soundarya, Vaithi and Tulasi feel content while Tamizh fumes as Meenakshi leaves his house as Vettaiyan's wife. Tamizh tells Pandi about Meenakshi reconciling with Vettaiyan and conspires to separate them. Kalaiarasi is inconsolable seeing Vettaiyan and Meenakshi together.Meenakshi and Vettaiyan rejoice on finally being together. However, Vettaiyan gets furious when Sudha humiliates him and Meenakshi. Later, Meenakshi pacifies and motivates a dejected and guilt-ridden Vettaiyan.

"Saravanan Meenatchi" story resolves around the theme of Love after marriage, we can't always get what we wanted but there is always something better right in front of our eyes however it takes time and commitment to see it.
