Friedrich Engel-Janosi

Friedrich Engel von Jánosi (18 February 1893 – 7 March 1978) was an Austrian-American historian. He wrote under the name Engel-Janosi.

Biography

Friedrich Engel-Jánosi was born in Oberdöbling, the son of Austrian industrialist Moritz Engel de Jánosi. He had Hungarian-Jewish roots but was baptized a Roman Catholic. Engel-Janosi earned a doctorate in law and philosophy, and in 1929 he received his habilitation.

After the annexation of Austria he had to emigrate to Cambridge in 1939, then he went to Baltimore. From 1942, he taught in Washington, D.C., in 1959 he returned to Austria and held a professorship at the University of Vienna until 1969. On February 22, 1978 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Salzburg. He was a corresponding member of the British Academy from 1973.

Friedrich Engel-Jánosi was a grandson of Adolph Engel de Jánosi and nephew of Josef Engel de Jánosi and Alexander Engel de Jánosi. He was buried at the Döbling Cemetery.
