It was carved out of the southern part of Bihar state on 15 November 2000. Jharkhand shares its border with the states of Bihar to the north, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh to the west, Orissa to the south, and West Bengal to the east.

The industrial city of Ranchi is its capital. Some of the other major cities and industrial centres are Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Sindri, Giridih, Gumla, Deoghar, Hazaribagh and Dhanbad once a part of West Bengal.

Jharkhand is famed for its mineral wealth and forestry products.

The university has a total student intake of around 90,000 students from its affiliated colleges. It has a central library with approximately 150,000 books for the academic needs of the students. There are a total of 2 male hostels and 4 female hostels in the university campus situated at Kutchery Road, Morabadi in Ranchi. The university is financially dependent on UGC funds (Rs. 38 crores annually) in addition to the fees paid by the students.

The current Vice-Chancellor of Ranchi University is Dr A A Khan.

There are a total of 35 constituent colleges and 29 affiliated colleges of Ranchi University. The colleges under Ranchi University offer courses in Medical, Engineering, Management, Science, Arts and Law streams.

After winning the title of Miss India World and later becoming Miss World 2000, Priyanka has become one of the most successful and popular actresses from the industry.

Priyanka studied at La Martiniere Girls' College in Lucknow, as a young girl and later came to the United States, where she was a student at Newton North High School, in Newton, Massachusetts and North Delta Senior Secondary High School in North Delta before returning to India to complete high school at Army Public School (Bareilly). She began college at Jai Hind College in Mumbai but left after winning the Miss World pageant.

Priyanka was crowned Miss India World and later Miss World in 2000. In the same year, Lara Dutta and Diya Mirza, both from India, won the Miss Universe and Miss Asia Pacific crowns, in a rare triple.

Ranchi <phonos file="Ranchi.ogg">pronunciation</phonos> (Hindi: राँची) is the capital city of the Indian state of Jharkhand. Ranchi was the centre of the Jharkhand movement for a separate state for the tribal regions of South Bihar. Jharkhand was formed on 15 November 2000 by carving out the districts of Chota Nagpur and Santhal Parganas divisions of Bihar. As a part of Bihar, it used to be the summer capital from the time of the British Raj because of its cool climate. It is not very far from Rajrappa, another seminal place in the state of Jharkhand.
