Purpose of use |
This song is from the time of Bowie's retreat from drug excess to live in Germany for a period, when he began work on his Berlin Trilogy, the three albums including the song's parent album. Commencing part way through the third verse, the sample demonstrates the use of ambient sounds , including synthesizer, characteristic of the first two Berlin Trilogy albums, as well as the sound created for the song by guitarist Robert Fripp, who joined Bowie's musicians during this period, themes discussed in the article. Words alone are inadequate to describe the song, and presenting the sound of this song is necessary for a complete understanding of its nature and its contrast with material from other periods, and hence of the way the Bowie's music evolved. |
