 The Jackson family are an African American family of musicians who originated in Gary, Indiana and later relocated to Encino, California. Performing as members of The Jackson 5 and as solo artists, the children of Joseph Walter and Katherine Esther Jackson influenced and shaped the sound of popular music. As a group, the eldest sons Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael; set the family on a path of musical and television success that spread among siblings Rebbie, La Toya, Randy and Janet. They are followed by some of the next generation of Jacksons such as Taj, TJ and Taryll—collectively known as 3T. The acclaim of The Jackson 5 (later billed as The Jacksons) led the group to become known as the "First Family of Soul"; the continued success of Michael and Janet's careers as solo artists led the Jacksons to become known as the "Royal Family of Pop". Eight of the nine Jackson siblings have gold records to their credits. In recent years, certain members of the family have been honored for their work: in 1997 The Jackson 5 were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Michael would follow the group to the hall in 2001. In 2002, Joseph was acknowledged as "the best musical manager of all time" by the Hall in Cleveland. He was given the name "Jackie" by relatives. Aspiring to be a professional baseball player, Jackson forsook that dream when he and his 4 younger brothers formed the Jackson 5 in 1964. His older sister Rebbie didn't take part. Jackie and his two younger brothers Tito and Jermaine were part of an early incarnation of the group as The Jackson Brothers in 1964. Jackie's role in the Jackson 5 was as the high tenor singer opposite the lead vocals of Michael and Jermaine. Selected family member -Marlon David Jackson (born March 12, 1957) is an American singer, dancer, former member of The Jackson 5, and elder brother of American pop stars Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. While Marlon was still a child, his older brothers Jackie, Tito and Jermaine formed an early incarnation of what would become The Jackson 5. Marlon and younger brother Michael would soon join the group, initially as percussionists. In the early years of the group it was said that Marlon had trouble singing and keeping up with his brothers dance steps. However through his perseverance he would become a proficient singer, songwriter, producer and dancer. In 1987, Marlon released his debut solo album Baby Tonight, an album he wrote and produced himself. It featured the No. 2 R&B hit "Don't Go" which he performed to an enthusiastic audience on The Late Show with Arsenio Hall. Selected television show -The Jacksons is an American variety show featuring the Jackson siblings (except for Jermaine, who was signed to Motown while the Jackson group was signed to the CBS record label). It was the first variety show where the entire cast were siblings. As with the Jackson 5 regular performances, Michael Jackson was the lead performer in musical and dance performances. The thirty-minute Wednesday evening show began airing on CBS as a summer 1976 show and it continued into the 1976–1977 season, finishing on March 9, 1977 after running for 12 episodes. Jermaine and his brothers signed with Motown Records in 1968 In 1975, after six years performing with his brothers, Jermaine split from the Jackson 5 to continue his solo career at Motown Records while the other Jackson brothers left to sign with Epic Records. Like Michael, Jermaine began a solo career while still a member of The Jackson 5, and had a hit with the 1972 Shep and the Limelites cover "Daddy's Home". When The Jackson 5 left Motown, Jermaine left the group and stayed at Motown. Some thought it was because he was married to Hazel Gordy, the daughter of Motown founder Berry Gordy, but on the reality TV series starring him and the other members of the group, minus Michael, he said it was because "Motown was gonna make us like the Beatles. Selected family member -Maureen Reillette Brown (née Jackson; born May 29, 1950) is an American singer professionally known as Rebbie Jackson. Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, she is the eldest child of the Jackson family of musicians. She first performed on stage with her siblings during shows in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in 1974, before subsequently appearing in the television series The Jacksons. At age 34, Jackson released her debut album Centipede (1984). The album featured songs written by Smokey Robinson, Prince and her younger brother Michael, whose contribution (the title track "Centipede") became Rebbie's most successful single release. By the end of the 1980s, the singer had released two more albums in quick succession: Reaction (1986) and R U Tuff Enuff (1988). Following a 10-year hiatus in her musical career, Jackson returned with the 1998 album Yours Faithfully. "2300 Jackson Street" is a 1989 single released by The Jacksons from their album of the same name. The song features Michael Jackson, who previously left the group, although this is the only track that he is featured on the album. It also features two of the Jackson sisters Rebbie and Janet. "2300 Jackson Street" is about the Jackson family's childhood home in Gary, Indiana. The track was written and composed by The Jacksons as well as Teddy Riley among others. It peaked on the Billboard R&B singles chart at #9. The video features most of the Jackson family members, including children of The Jacksons. La Toya is not featured in the music video nor the song, as she was estranged from the family at the time. no subcategories
