The first edition of Ávvir was published on Sami National Day, i.e., 6 February 2008[2] The newspaper's offices are located in Kárášjohka and Kautokeino.
The word ávvir means "care" or "attention" in Northern Sámi.[3] The name was proposed by Laila Susanne Vars of Láhpoluoppal in Kautokeino.
