The 2016–17 Basketball Champions League will be the inaugural season of the Basketball Champions League, a European basketball club competition launched by FIBA.[1] The competition will start on 27 September 2016, with the qualifying rounds, and will finish on 30 April 2017.

Format

The regular season will be joined by 32 teams, 24 will qualify directly and the other eight will come from the qualifying rounds. These teams will be divided into four groups of eight teams. The four first qualified teams of each group will qualify to the play-offs while qualified teams in 5th and 6th position will be dropped to the FIBA Europe Cup.

In the play-offs, the Round of 16 play-offs and the Quarter-Final play-offs will be played with a double-leg format. Four teams will play the Final Four of the competition.[2]

Play-offs

In the play-offs, teams play against each other over two legs on a home-and-away basis. Thus, the score of one single game can be tied.

  • The team that finished in the higher regular season place will be played the second game of the series at home.
  • If both teams placed the same in the regular season, the team with more regular season wins will be played the second game at home.
  • In case of a tie in both place and victories, the team with the higher cumulative regular season point difference will be played the second game at home.
