The 2016 AFC Cup knock-out stage is being played from 24 May to 5 November 2016.[1] A total of 16 teams compete in the knock-out stage to decide the champions of the 2016 AFC Cup.[2]

Qualified teams

The winners and runners-up of each of the eight groups in the group stage qualified for the knock-out stage. Both West Zone and East Zone have eight qualified teams.

Format

In the knock-out stage, the 16 teams play a single-elimination tournament, with the teams split between the two zones until the final. In the quarter-finals and semi-finals, each tie is played on a home-and-away two-legged basis, while in the round of 16 and final, each tie is played as a single match. The away goals rule (for two-legged ties), extra time (away goals do not apply in extra time) and penalty shoot-out are used to decide the winner if necessary.[2]

Schedule

The schedule of each round is as follows.[1]

Round First leg Second leg
Round of 16 24–25 May 2016
Quarter-finals 13–14 September 2016 20–21 September 2016
Semi-finals 27–28 September 2016 18–19 October 2016
Final 5 November 2016

Bracket

In the round of 16, the winners of one group played the runners-up of another group from the same zone, with the group winners hosting the match. The matchups were determined as follows:[3]

The draw for the quarter-finals will be held on 9 June 2016. The four teams from the West Zone are drawn into two ties, and the four teams from the East Zone are drawn into the other two ties. There is no seeding or country protection, so teams from the same association can be drawn into the same tie.

In the semi-finals, the two teams from the West Zone play each other, and the two teams from the East Zone play each other. The order of legs is determined by the quarter-final draw, with the winners of quarter-finals 1 and 3 hosting the first leg, and the winners of quarter-finals 2 and 4 hosting the second leg.

In the final, the host team is either decided by a draw or determined by the AFC, to be confirmed prior to the quarter-final draw.

The entire knock-out stage bracket will be determined after the quarter-final draw.
