Australian Wool Board

The Australian Wool Board came into being on 1 July 1963 following the recommendations to government of a specially appointed committee. The most important recommendation was that wool promotion research and testing should be brought under the control of a single body which should also act as an advisory authority on wool marketing.

Objectives

• Wool promotion in Australia and overseas through the International Wool Secretariat with the Wool Boards of New Zealand South Africa and Uruguay
• Provision of testing services for wool and wool products
• Provision of advice to government on wool research activities by government bodies in relation to the needs of the wool industry
• Oversight of all aspects of wool marketing but without executive powers over marketing

Funding

By a levy on woolgrowers first instituted to finance wool promotion activities in 1936 and later supplemented by the Commonwealth Government
