History
Established in 2007, the first major target of Azam FC was to get the best players who would help the now established club to gain promotion to play in the Tanzanian Premier League. Azam FC joined the top flight of Tanzanian football for the 2008–09 season. Azam FC, with many leading African players, became a force to reckon with in the domestic league. Azam FC finished in eighth position in its first season of top-flight football, before making a tremendous improvement the following season, finishing in the third position in the league.
Success
Since finishing in third position in 2009–10, Azam FC has managed to recruit some of the best players in Tanzania. Former Young Africans and national team player Mrisho Ngassa is one player that has arrived since that historic season. Ngassa arrived at Azam FC for a record-breaking transfer fee and is now the most expensive player in Tanzania. Apart from Ngassa, the team has signed, among others, Kali Ongala from Sweden and Rwanda's skipper, Patrick Mafisango. The list also includes Jabir Aziz, Ramadhani “Redondo” Chombo and aerial Ugandan striker, Peter Ssenyonjo. One of the homegrown players on Azam FC, John Raphael Bocco, was among the top three scorers in the Tanzanian Premier League in 2013–14.
Azam won the Tanzanian Premier League in 2013–14, finishing 6 points ahead of second place Young Africans SC.[1]
