Babymetal concert chronology

The Babymetal World Tour 2016: Legend Metal Resistance (stylized as BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2016 LEGEND -METAL RESISTANCE-) was the third worldwide concert tour by Japanese band Babymetal. Supporting their second album Metal Resistance (2016), the tour ran from April 2, 2016 to September 20, 2016, taking place in Japan, the United States, and several countries in Europe. The tour commenced the day after the worldwide release of Metal Resistance on April 1, 2016.

Background

On December 13, 2015 (2015-12-13), a YouTube video was posted on the band's official channel for the previously untitled album, announced with its April 1 release dubbed "Fox Day". Simultaneously, a 2016 world tour was also announced, with its planned final performance date at Tokyo Dome. The tour was set to begin at Wembley Arena on April 2, 2016 (2016-04-02), the day after the album's worldwide release, and end at Tokyo Dome on September 19, 2016 (2016-09-19).[1][2] On July 4, another date was announced for Tokyo Dome, extending the tour to September 20.[3]

As of May 6, 2016, most shows for the North American leg were sold out, with the remaining shows limited in tickets, notable since Japanese music, despite being the world's second-largest music industry, has little international following.[4]

According to Yui Mizuno, the band members will "grow as a bigger band by experiencing this upcoming world tour so that we can come back to Japan and play at a huge venue as Tokyo Dome". Suzuka Nakamoto stated the desire to develop the new songs from Metal Resistance.[5]

Development

Concerning the final shows at Tokyo Dome, the set was more decorated, with three tombstone-shaped catwalks connected to the stage, a tower rose with big screens attached, and a platform on top of it. In addition, the stage included lasers, explosions, pyro, and a periodically rotating center stage.[6] The three band members wore red and black costumes, which were imitated by cosplayed who attened the shows. The audience generally contained a mix of heavy metal fans and Japanese idol fans, who would headbang, sing, or dance to each song.[7]

Critical response

Graham Hartmann of Loudwire positively reviewed the band's performance in New York City on May 4, 2016. Describing the concert as "stripped-down" and featuring highlights from their first two albums, he called the show "refreshing" how little production was put on the performance, noting how the vocal performance was not perfect. Regardless, he praised the girls' choreography and the instrumentals of the supporting Kami Band.[8] Ben Ratliff of The New York Times described the set list as becoming "a little more knowing, though no less weird", calling "Amore" a highlight of the show, while noting that the appeal for the band was "energy and melody, and the work of skilled songwriters".[9] Jason Roche of L.A. Weekly described the show in Los Angeles on July 15 as "more of a community center lock-in party than a Friday night out getting drinks and watching a band", highlighting Nakamoto's vocal performance. Although he praised the vocals that of Mizuno and Kikuchi, he stated that their stage presence is highlighted more by their "endless energy". He also noted that show show ran for a full 80 minutes with no break between sets, while the audience "stuck with the band through every song, their energy level never wavering".[10]

Broadcast and recording

The concert at Wembley Arena on April 2 was broadcast live to 24,000 people in Japan at Zepp Sapporo, Zepp Fukuoka, and delayed to Tsutaya O-East, which screened for an audience of 12,000.[11][12] Wowow broadcast the concert at Wembley Arena,[13] as well as the performance at Rock in Japan Festival 2016 on August 6, 2016,[14] and both shows at Tokyo Dome on September 19 and 20.[15] These shows were also released as live audio and video albums Live at Wembley and Live at Tokyo Dome.[16][17]

Live at Wembley: Babymetal World Tour 2016 Kicks Off at The SSE Arena Wembley (stylized as 「LIVE AT WEMBLEY」BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2016 kicks off at THE SSE ARENA, WEMBLEY) is the fifth live album by Babymetal. The video album was released on November 23, 2016, while the live album was released on December 28, 2016 in Japan. The concert marked the first time a Japanese band headlined a show at the venue.[16]

The album features the live performance at Wembley Arena on April 2, 2016, kicking off the band's world tour. A trailer was released for the album on November 11, 2016.[37]

Content

Approximately 12,500 people attended the show. After an introductory video subtitled "Metal Resistance Episode IV: Reincarnation", as three masked figures in white robes appear on the stage, only to disappear. Next, the three members appear on the stage, performing "Babymetal Death" with ABBA-style dance moves with Kami Band supporting them.[38] Songs from Metal Resistance performed included the Black Babymetal song "GJ!", the Su-metal solo "Amore", and an English version of the song "The One"; concerning the latter, Mizuno said “I was very happy when our fans raised up many different countries’ flags while we sang”.[39] The show's final song "road of Resistance" contains a Wall of Death formation in the audience, and Kikuchi, Mizuno, and Nakamoto thank the audence afterwards, saying "You are also precious to me. I love you!", "It is thanks to you that we are here today! We love London!", and "We are going back to Japan, but remember we are always on your side! See you!", respectively.[12]

Live at Wembley received generally positive reviews. Tim Sendra of AllMusic noted that the "guitars are a touch more brutal and the overall sound is rougher, but the vocals come through loud and clear", and stated that although the release "wasn't as fun as the [studio] albums", it was made for appeal from the band's "ridiculous sound, boundless energy, and catchy songs".[40] Eleanor Goodman of TeamRock called the album "an uplifting burst of energy that's mose welcom in these bleak midwinter times", only criticising the silent gaps between tracks, as well as the removal of some songs from the band's debut album.[41]

Hannah Evans of The Guardian praised the band's performance, stating that the girls "prove they’re no gimmick but a metal phenomenon on a mission". She further described the "slick dance routines and the blending of every genre from trap to bubblegum pop" as complimentary to the venue and production budget.[42]

Live at Tokyo Dome (stylized as LIVE AT TOKYO DOME) is the seventh video album by Babymetal. It was released on April 12, 2017 in DVD, Blu-ray formats.[17]

The album features the live performances at Tokyo Dome on September 19, 2016 and September 20, 2016, concluding the band's world tour. The concerts were denoted as "Red Night" and "Black Night", respectively. A trailer was released for the album on March 15, 2017.[52]

Content

Tickets to both shows sold out, with 55,000 people attending the concerts each day. The September 19 show, subtiled "Red Night", begins with an introductory video which states that the shows will not perform any song twice, nor will there be any MCs or encores. Red spotlights move around the arena, ending on the band three members who have appeard on stage with Kami Band. The show mainly focused on songs released from Metal Resistance. Near the end of the concert, the band performs "Tales of The Destinies" for the first time, which transitions into the final song, the English version of "The One" which begins with the three members walking from the runways off the stage to the center, wearing golden cloaks.[53]

The show on September 20, subtitled "Black Night", focuses more on songs released from Babymetal. With Kami Band playing on the stage, the three members show up crucified onto crosses on the stage, transitioning into the opener "Babymetal Death". During the interlude for "Megitsune", Nakamoto yells to the crowd, "Are you ready? Everybody clap your hands!" while Mizuno and Kikuchi continue to engage the crowd. When performing "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!" the latter two are shown in a smokescreen of carbon dioxide while the crowd headbangs to the bridge of the song. The final song "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" concludes Chapter 4 of the Metal Resistance.[54]

Critical reception

Frédéric Leclercq positively reviewed the shows, which had been sold out, describing the production as "incredible" while descring the "tombstone-shaped catwalks" and screen-filled tower on the stage. The shows were described as "90 minutes of crazy lasers, explosions, pyro, the circular centre stage rotating from time to time", while the performance of Kami Band was called "flawless".[6] Sue Williamson of Teen Vogue described the shows as "sensory overload in its most kawaii form", highlighting the band's "perfectly coordinated choreography, video elements, and totally unique sound".[7]
