The women's 10 km pursuit biathlon competition of the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics was held on 12 February 2018 at the Alpensia Cross-Country Centre in Pyeongchang, South Korea.[1][2] The field was the same as for the sprint event, held two days earlier, with competitors starting time dependent on their final time in the sprint event. Laura Dahlmeier, who was the champion in the sprint event, won the second title, the first time in the Olympic woman biathlon when the sprint champion became also the pursuit champion. Anastasiya Kuzmina became second, and Anaïs Bescond third.[3] For Bescond, this was the first Olympic medal.
Summary
Dahlmeier started first, and in the first prone shooting hit all targets. The sprint silver medalist Marte Olsbu missed a target, and between the prone shootings Dalmeier was followed by the Veronika Vítková, and by Anastasiya Kuzmina who was running faster, took over Vítková, and by the second prone shooting closed the gap to Dahlmeyer by 10 seconds. Dahlmeyer, Kuzmina, and Vítková all missed one target in the second prone shooting, and Anaïs Bescond and Irene Cadurisch, who did not miss, came into contention. By 5 km, Kuzmina was leading, with Dahlmeyer 0.7 seconds behind her, followed by Bescond and Cadurisch half a minute behind. In the first standing shooting, Kuzmina missed two targets, Bescond missed one, Cadurisch missed three and dropped out of medal contention. Dahlmeier did not miss, the only one of the leading group, and took 40 seconds lead over Kuzmina. Vítková was third, followed by Bescond. All other athletes were more than a minute behind. In the second standing shooting, Dahlmeier and Bescond did not miss, whereas Kuzmina missed once, dropping almost a minute behind Dahlmeier and a second ahead of Bescond. Vítková missed two targets and dropped out of medal contention. Other competitors trailed Kuzmina and Bescond by at least 30 seconds. The only question left at this point was who wins the silver medal. Kuzmina and Bescond ran together until the finish, where Kuzmina won the silver, leaving Bescond with bronze.
In the victory ceremony, the medals were presented by Danka Barteková, member of the International Olympic Committee, accompanied by Olle Dahlin, IBU Vice President of Development.
