Charles Maybon (1872 – 28 April 1926), was a French professor, writer and journalist known for his activities in China and Indochina.[1]

Biography

Charles Maybon was born in Marseille. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1898. Maybon arrived in Hanoi in 1905 to take charge of the Auguste Pavie School, designed to educate the sons of mandarins in Yunnan, on the initiative of Governor General Paul Beau, in order to open the Chinese to French culture. He was also a professor of Chinese and Far Eastern history at the Indochinese University and an intern at the French School of the Far East (EFEO).

He went on a mission to China to search for the best communication route between the middle valley of the Xijiang and the sea, between Nanning and Haiphong.

He directed the Revue Indochinoise, which included the collaboration of many researchers, such as Georges Cordier. In 1907 he became secretary-librarian of the EFEO. He gave Chinese courses in the absence of Paul Pelliot. In 1911, he founded the French School of Shanghai which he directed for nine years.

He defended two theses for his doctorate in literature: one devoted to the missionary Pierre-Jacques Lemonnier de La Bissachère, the other dealing with the relations of Europeans with Annam from the end of the 16th century to the beginning of the 19th century. In 1920, he became the director of the Franco-Chinese Technical Institute in Shanghai for three years.

In 1925, he joined the Public Education Department in Indochina as Director of the Higher School of Pedagogy. He reconsidered the training of teachers as well as the preparation of school textbooks.

He died as a result of an automobile accident in Carnoules during a stay in France.[2]
