In 2012, Hungary had a murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 population.[1] There were a total of 132 murders in Hungary in 2012.[1] The murder rate doubled in 2013 to 2.7 per 100,000.[2]
General
In 2010, there were an average of 4,000 crimes against every 100,000 members of the population, of which at least 50% were considered serious crimes.[3]
Corruption
Corruption is a severe issue in Hungary.[4] According to Transparency International Hungary, almost one-third of top managers claim they regularly bribe politicians.[4] Most people (42%) in Hungary think that the sector most affected by bribery is the political party system.[5]
Bribery is common in the healthcare system in the form of gratitude payment–92% of all people think that some payment should be made to the head surgeon conducting a heart operation or an obestetrician for a child birth.[6]
By location
Jozsef Hatala of the National Police (ORFK) stated in 2011 that the criminal underworld is strongest in Budapest and its surrounding counties.[3] Hatala also stated that the majority of criminal offenses outright were carried out in Hungary’s north-eastern county (Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County).[3]
