Dyad (music)

In music, a dyad (less commonly, doad) is a set of two notes or pitches[1] that imply a chord. To understand dyads it is necessary first to understand the intervals between the notes. [2] Take the notes C and E for example, we know that the interval between these two pitches is a major third, which can imply a C major chord (C E G).[3] The most common two-note "chord" is the interval of a perfect fifth, which has been used in nearly all discovered pieces of polyphonic music. The reason fifths are so common is because of the harmonic series.[citation needed] The harmonic series is built over a fundamental pitch, and the rest of the partials in the series are called overtones. The second partial is an octave above the fundamental and the third pitch is a fifth, so if C is the fundamental pitch the second note is C an octave higher and then the next pitch would be G. The harmonic series has more fifths than just this one, for example the fourth to the sixth, the sixth to the ninth and the seventh to the eleventh partial are all a fifth away from each other, though the latter two are of slightly different sizes than the former ones.

Since an interval is the distance between two pitches, a dyad can be classified by the interval it represents. When the pitches of a dyad occur in succession, they form a melodic interval. When they occur simultaneously, they form a harmonic interval.
