It was announced on 9 December 2014, that the 2016 contest will take place in Cologne, Germany on 3 September 2016.[1][2] This will be the second consecutive time that the German city have hosted the Young Musicians, with the last being the Eurovision Young Musicians 2014.[3] It will also be the third time that Germany have been the host nation, with their first in Berlin for the Eurovision Young Musicians 2002.[4]

Format

On 28 April 2016, Daniel Hope and Tamina Kallert were announced as the hosts of the contest.[5]

Each of the 11 participants will perform a piece of up to six minutes in length, which will be judged by a five-person professional jury. Jurors will comment on the performances after each participant has finished their piece, adding to the interaction during the show. After all of the performances, the jury will award points to each participant, with the total scores being used to decide the winner. Prizes were be awarded to the first, second, and third placed participants.[6]

Provisional list of participants

The following countries have expressed their provisional interest for participation in the 2016 contest. The semi final elimination stage of the contest will return this year,[7] with the first semi final taking place on 28 August 2016 and the second on 29 August, the final will take place on 3 September 2016.[8] However the semi-finals were later removed due to the low number of participating countries.[9]

This year, only 11 countries will participate in the contest,[9] equalling the number of countries that participated in 1992. San Marino will make their debut at the Eurovision Young Musicians. Greece, Moldova, Netherlands and Portugal withdrew from this year's competition.[10]
