Bayer Leverkusen
After being promoted to the first team, He made his Bundesliga debut on 6 November 2009 against Eintracht Frankfurt.[1] He had a clean sheet and the team won 4–0.
On 1 December 2010, he made his international debut for the UEFA Europa League, substituting Bayer's #1 goalkeeper, René Adler. The team won 1–0 against Norway's Rosenborg.
On 7 August 2011 against 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the opening weekend of the 2011–12 Bundesliga season, Giefer was concussed and stated that he doesn't remember anything about the last month.[2][3][4]
Fortuna Düsseldorf
On 4 June 2012, it was announced that Giefer will join Fortuna Düsseldorf with a two-year contract until 30 June 2014.[5] Giefer revealed he turned down a move to Bayern Munich because he wanted a first team action as Giefer would be a back-up to first choice goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, if he did joined.[6] He made his competitive debut, in the first round of DFB-Pokal, in a 1–0 win over Wacker Burghausen[7] In a 3–2 loss against Augsburg, Giefer says he was responsible for the conceding after the match and will not get over his mistake[8] A week on, Giefer would make amends when he provided assist for Axel Bellinghausen, in a 1–0 win over Greuther Fürth.
Schalke 04
In June 2014, it was announced that Giefer will join Schalke 04 and he was assigned the squad number 34.
