Henry Lau (born October 11, 1989),[1] simply known by his stage name Henry, is a Canadian singer-songwriter, rapper, dancer, record producer, beatboxer and actor mostly active in South Korea. He is best known for being a member of Super Junior-M and the break-out star[2][3] in the Korean real-time military-variety show Real Men. While Lau's native language is English, he is also fluent in Mandarin, Korean, French, Spanish and Cantonese .[4] Henry made his solo debut in early June 2013 with the release of his debut mini-album Trap. He dubbed his fans as his "Strings." Lau is also a part of a composing team NoizeBank, which is a composing and production team that consists of four members, Henry Lau, Gen Neo, Neil Nallas, and Isaac Han.[5]

Early years

Henry's father is from Hong Kong and has Teochew ancestry[6] and his mother is from Pingtung, Taiwan (formerly part of Takao Prefecture).[7] He was raised in Willowdale, Toronto which is a middle-income area[8] of the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, located in the district of North York. He attended Kenollie Public School in Port Credit, Mississauga, Steelesview Public School, Zion Heights Junior High School, then North Toronto Collegiate Institute in grade 9, and attended A.Y. Jackson Secondary School in Toronto for the rest of his high school years before being chosen at the 2006 S.M. Entertainment Global Audition in Toronto, Ontario.[9] Only 2 people, including Henry, out of 3000 were recruited through the audition.[10] He briefly attended University of Toronto (Music Performance Major) in 2007.[11][12]

Henry's areas of expertise lie in violin, piano, popping, drum, latin dance, ballet, beat box, rap, song-writing, composing music, acting, guitar playing and singing. Lau started to learn to play the piano from his mother at the age of 5 and also learned to play the violin at the age of 6.[11] He later learned to play the electric violin in 2005.[12] Additionally, he learned a unique form of dancing called boogaloo popping while in high school. After only one year of dancing, Lau was competing in dance (popping) competitions and shows. Henry has gained many performance awards, such as the Canadian Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Regional Gold Medal (formerly known as the Silver Medal) for Level 10 Violin.[11] He has also completed RCM Level 10 Piano.[13] Lau said he had planned to become a professional violinist, but never expected to become an idol star before being selected by S.M. Entertainment in 2006.[9] and also said that he chose to join S.M. because if he turned to be a classical musician, he wouldn't be able to sing, dance, play the piano, and play the violin all together.

Career

2007-2009: Debut with Super Junior-M

Lau appeared as a violinist in South Korean group Super Junior's music video for their lead single "Don't Don" from their second studio album of the same name, released in September 2007.[14] The song includes a violin part, which is played by Lau.[15]

In October 2007, S.M. Entertainment announced that Han Geng, from Super Junior, and Lau were chosen as the first members to integrate a new subgroup from Super Junior, who would debut in China, named Super Junior-M with "M" representing the word "Mandarin".[16][17] The group debuted in China on April 8, 2008, at the 8th Annual Music Chart Awards, with the release of their first official album, Me (Chinese: 迷; pinyin: Mí), and its lead single, "U", which is a remake of the main group's hit single, along with its music video.[18] The song differs from the original Korean release: it contains heavier bass instruments, a closer musical approach to hip hop and jazz. The song also has extra music bridges, such as a violin bridge performed by Lau and an added dance bridge.[19] The group was very active in China, taking part in variety shows, concerts, and fan-meetings.[20][21]

Lau made a cameo appearance in leader Han Geng's drama, Stage of Youth, as himself, which aired on CCTV2 in 2009.[22]

Lau returned to the music industry after a year-long break with the release of Super Junior-M's first mini-album, Super Girl, on September 23, 2009.[23] The mini-album became very successful, won many awards, and even earned the group a nomination for "Best Vocal Group" at the 21st Golden Melody Awards, the Chinese equivalent to the Grammy Awards.[24]

Lau was featured as a rapper on Zhang Li Yin's first single album, Moving On, released on October 29, 2009, on the track "Love Me" (Chinese: 愛我; pinyin: Ài wǒ).[25]

Lau performed on Super Junior's second Asia tour, Super Show 2, as part of Super Junior-M, and also performed a solo song called "Sick Of Love" that he produced, composed, and wrote himself. The song is sung in English, and hasn't been released yet.[26]

2010: Music production

Lau went on hiatus to study music at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.[27][28][29][30]

Lau composed a song with Super Junior's leader Leeteuk called "All My Heart" (Korean: 진심; Revised Romanization: Jinsim) for Super Junior's 4th repackaged album, Bonamana, released on June 28, 2010.[14][31]

Lau was featured as a rapper in a Jonghyun and Jino R&B duet titled "Don't Lie" from SM the Ballad's first album Miss You, released on November 29, 2010.[32]

Lau rearranged Justin Bieber's "Baby" and used the song to perform for the Super Show 3 Tour.[33]

2011-2012: Featurings, Final Recipe

Super Junior-M came back in February 2011, with the release of their second mini-album, Perfection (Chinese: 太完美; pinyin: Tàiwánměi), and its lead single of the same name. The mini-album includes a solo track by Lau titled "Off My Mind" (Chinese: 表白; pinyin: Biǎobái), which he produced, composed and wrote.[14]

Lau worked with Super Junior's leader Leeteuk again, and together they composed a song called "Andante" (Korean: 안단테; Revised Romanization: Andante) for Super Junior's 5th repackaged album, A-CHa, released on September 19, 2011.[14][34]

Lau toured with Super Junior as a member of Super Junior-M for their 4th tour, Super Show 4. He performed "Baby" by Justin Bieber once again during Super Show 4's opening stops in Seoul with another new arrangement with f(x)'s Amber performing alongside him as a featured rapper.[35] He also performed different songs. At Osaka, Japan, he performed a medley of songs by American singer Bruno Mars: he started by singing "Billionaire" by Travie McCoy with his guitar, then he sang "the Lazy Song" with a band, and finally sang "Lighters" by Bad Meets Evil with the piano, and finished by playing the violin.[36] In Singapore, he also performed his solo song "Off My Mind".[37][38]

Super Junior with Lau and fellow Super Junior-M member Zhou Mi released the single "Santa U Are The One", taken from SMTown's eighth winter album, 2011 Winter SMTown – The Warmest Gift, released on December 13, 2011.[39]

Lau participated in the OST for Taiwanese drama series Skip Beat! by featuring as a rapper on the track "This is Love" (Chinese: 這是愛; pinyin: Zhè shì ài) sung by fellow Super Junior-M member Donghae. The OST was released on February 24, 2011.[40]

Lau featured on BoA's single "One Dream" with SHINee's Key.[41] The song was released on March 18, 2012, and serves as the opening song for the audition programm K-pop Star on Seoul Broadcasting System. The single was included in BoA's 7th Korean studio album, Only One, released on July 22, 2012.[42][43]

Lau was cast as the main role for the movie Final Recipe (originally known as Cooktales) alongside renowned Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh, who also produced the film.[44] The movie tells the story of young aspiring chef Mark, played by Lau, who decides to participate in an international cooking contest in an attempt to save his grandfather's restaurant from going out of business.[45]

Lau became a member of the project group Younique Unit with fellow Super Junior-M member Eunhyuk, SHINee's Taemin, EXO's Kai and Luhan, and Girls' Generation's Hyoyeon, for a collaboration between S.M. Entertainment and Hyundai.[14] The music video for their single "Maxstep" was released on October 31, 2012.[46]

2013-present: Super Junior-M comeback and Solo debut

Lau featured on Girls' Generation's comeback performance "Romantic Fantasy" on MBC's Music Core. He performed "I Am" (Korean: 나는; Revised Romanization: Naneun) by Yoon Mi-rae with Yuri and Hyoyeon on January 1, 2013.[47]

Super Junior-M came back in January 2013 with the release of their second studio album, Break Down, released on January 7, 2013, along with its lead single of the same name.[48] The album includes two songs produced and composed by Lau's music production team, Noize Bank, titled "Go" and "It's You".[14] The lyrics for both songs were written by fellow Super Junior-M member Zhou Mi. Noize Bank is a music production team composed of Lau, Gen Neo, Neil Nallas, and Isaac Han.[49]

With the Korean version of the album released on January 31, Super Junior-M started Korean promotions for the album.[50][51] Lau debuted on Korean music programs as a member of Super Junior-M, and performed on Mnet's M! Countdown, KBS' Music Bank, MBC's Music Core and SBS' Inkigayo.[50][51][52] He also performed at the Seoul Music Awards with the group.[53]

On February 6, 2013, Lau was announced to be included as a contestant in the celebrity version of MasterChef Korea, titled MasterChef Korea Celebrity, airing on Olive TV.[54] The 11 contestants are Lau, Lee Kye-in, voice actor Seo Hye-jeong of Roller Coaster, actor Kim Sung-soo, actress Shin Eun-jung, Tony An, Son Hoyoung, Shin Bong-sun, Hwayobi, miss A's Fei and Dal Shabet's Jiyul.

On May 30, 2013, Lau was announced to be SM Entertainment's first male solo artist in 13 years,[4] after SM Entertainment revealed two mysterious pictures announcing the debut of their new solo artist on May 29, 2013.[55] His first solo mini-album, entitled Trap, was released on June 7, 2013.[56] On May 31, 2013, a teaser for the music video of "Trap" was released by SM Entertainment, which will feature Super Junior's Kyuhyun and SHINee's Taemin.[57] The music video was released on June 7, 2013 and a Chinese version music video was released on August 14, 2013.[58] Lau also promoted his mini album overseas, mainly Taiwan, with several appearances on TV and radio shows along with a fan sign event. On August 14, 2013, SM Entertainment announced that Lau would have follow-up promotions for a re-release of his song "1-4-3 (I Love You)" from Trap as a digital single featuring his close friend and fellow label mate, Amber of f(x).[58] Their company stated that "Amber is scheduled to stand on his solo activities stages ..." [59]

On February 2014, Lau joined the cast of the Korean real-time military-variety show Real Men, with fellow celebrities, Chun Jung-myung, Park Gun-hyung, K.Will.[60][61] He quickly became the break-out star and variety favorite because of his natural optimism and eagerness to learn Korean culture, despite being Canadian-born and completely unfamiliar with the Korean military.[2][3] In addition, his appearance in Star King further cemented his skills,[62] along with his appearance in Real Men propelled his rising popularity, leading to more variety show opportunities like being chosen as the first guest star in JTBC's Crime Scene[63] and his first solo endorsement opportunity with KFC Korea[64] and netting his second solo endorsement with Sprite Korea.[65] After almost seven months of production, Henry released his second EP solo album entitled Fantastic with the lead single of same title.[66]

In 2015, Henry guest starred on popular reality show, SBS's Roommate.[67] In March, SM Entertainment had confirmed that Henry has joined a sitcom, We Got Married and was paired up with (the now disbanded group) Jewelry's Yewon.[68] Henry released a single on March 20, titled "Love +" in collaboration with Persevere, Goo Haera star Yoo Sung Eun.[69] In addition, he is currently preparing for his third album to be released later this year.[70]

Before debuting as a member of Super Junior-M, Lau originally debuted as a "mystery violinist" in Super Junior's 2007 single "Don't Don"[15] which caused a controversy among the fans after SM Entertainment officially announced Lau to be a member of a new Super Junior sub-unit. Previously, there were rumors stating that Henry was to be the fourteenth member of Super Junior, stemming from SM's statement regarding the controversy, which led fans to form an "Only 13" campaign.
