James Floyd is a British actor who has starred in films such as Everywhere and Nowhere and My Brother the Devil.

Biography

Floyd was born in London, England. He is multiracial. He received a scholarship on the Assisted Places Scheme, for families with low enough income, to the private school University College School.[1][2] He is an alumnus of the National Youth Theatre and has been described as a method actor.[3][4]

Career

Film

Floyd's first feature film was Tormented, where he played a morbidly obsessed emo goth.[5] He then played a washed-up Mancunian 1980s pop star in the film The Infidel.[6] His first starring role was in Everywhere and Nowhere.[7] It played at the 2011 Mumbai Film Festival and Dinard Film Festival and was released in 2011 in the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Screen International wrote 'Floyd gives an attractive star performance' and Time Out described it as 'a career-making performance'.[8][9][10]

His breakout role was as the lead in Sally El Hosaini's debut feature film My Brother the Devil alongside Saïd Taghmaoui. His performance won him a BIFA for Best Newcomer at British Independent Film Awards, earned him Best Male Actor at the Milan Film Festival plus a nomination for an Evening Standard Film Award.[11][12][13] The film won many international awards and had its World Premiere at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival where it was Grand Jury Prize nominated and won the Best Cinematography award.[14] It also won the Europa Cinemas Label award for Best European Film at the Berlin International Film Festival, the CBA Worldview Sundance London award plus awards at BFI London Film Festival.[15][16][17]

Of his performance, Evening Standard said 'Floyd's performance is outstanding',[18] A Time Out review for the film stated "James Floyd in particular must now be on every director’s must-cast list."[19] The Hollywood Reporter noted 'My Brother the Devil should put Floyd on the casting map.' while The Times wrote 'Floyd is particularly arresting' while the Daily Telegraph praised his portrayal as 'reminiscent of Robert De Niro'.[20][21] Empire wrote 'James Floyd is magnetic', with Daily Mail praising 'an eye catching central performance'[22][23]

Floyd co-stars in upcoming British noir thriller 'City of Tiny Lights'.[24] He also plays the lead role of Alex Harks in upcoming American industrial espionage thriller Newcomer.[25]

Television

In 2009, James was seen in Compulsion (based on Jacobean tragedy The Changeling (play) playing a feckless son of an industrialist alongside Ray Winstone and Parminder Nagra.[26]

He then appeared alongside Marton Csokas and Hayley Attwell in the Seville set crime series Falcón (TV series) for Sky Atlantic.[27]

He portrayed Freddie Mercury in the 2012 BBC Four Kenny Everett biopic The Best Possible Taste.[28] The New Statesman singled out his interpretation of Mercury as "a delightful performance by James Floyd."[29]

He starred as Ishbaal in the ABC television drama Of Kings and Prophets.[30]

Theatre

In 2007 he played Angus McBane in J.B. Priestley's play The Glass Cage at the Royal & Derngate Theatre, directed by Laurie Sansom. The Independent's Paul Taylor gave it 4 stars and named James "A star-in-the-making"[31]

Other performances include, in 2008, the lead in Anna Ziegler's Dov & Ali at Theatre 503 where The Stage called him 'quite superb'[32] and The Guardian's Lyn Gardner wrote 'James Floyd is impressive'.[33]

Awards

For his performance in My Brother the Devil, Floyd won a BIFA for Best Newcomer at British Independent Film Awards, Best Male Actor at Milan Film Festival and was nominated for an Evening Standard Film Award.[34][35][36]

He was selected as a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit 2013 and was a Screen International Star of Tomorrow 2012.[37][38]
