Jean Flori (7 April 1936 – 18 April 2018) was a French medieval historian. He was a research director for the National Center for Scientific Research,[1] and the author of books about chivalry and the Crusades.[2] A student of Georges Duby, he is one of the twentieth century's "major historian[s] of chivalry".[3]

Biography

The son of a leather worker and a school principal, Jean Flori began engineering studies at the École Breguet in Paris. He ended his studies just before graduation to turn to teaching. Having become a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, he began studying theology at the Adventist Seminary in Collonges-sous-Salève while teaching mathematics at the institution's secondary school.6 Having become a theology professor in 1964, he simultaneously began studying medieval history at the Grenoble faculty. He obtained his title in 1968. In 1970, he met Professor Georges Duby, who was to become his thesis director.

His state thesis was entitled: Chivalry and chivalric ideology. A Study of the Formation of the Concept of Chivalry to the Early Thirteenth Century.

He was awarded a doctorate in literature and humanities (Panthéon-Sorbonne, 1981) and is director of research at the CNRS (Center for Advanced Studies in Medieval Civilization of Poitiers). He was a specialist in the tenth and eleventh centuries and in warrior ideologies (chivalry, crusades, holy war, jihad, eschatology)

Jean Flori died in Carnac.
