Jonathan Frederick "Jon" Tenney[1] (born December 16, 1961) is an American actor, best known for his role as Fritz Howard on the TNT series The Closer and Major Crimes.
Early life
Tenney was born in Princeton, New Jersey, the son of Dr. Lillian Sandra Baum, a psychiatrist, and Frederick Haworth Tenney, a research physicist.[2] His maternal grandparents were Polish Jewish immigrants, while his paternal forbears were of English ancestry.[1][3] He received his B.A. degree from Vassar College in 1984,[4] where he majored in drama and philosophy. He later attended The Juilliard School's Drama Division as a member of Group 19 (1986–1990).[5]
Career
Tenney made his professional debut starring in a touring production of The Real Thing directed by Mike Nichols.[6] This led to his working steadily on and off-Broadway, as well as in regional theater.[6] His New York City stage credits include Biloxi Blues, The Substance of Fire, and The Heiress.[6] His later began career on television. He starred in the number of short-lived series, including Steven Bochco series Brooklyn South, the Kristin Chenoweth sitcom Kristin and guest appearances on Will & Grace, Murphy Brown, Spenser: for Hire, and Get Real. Series with Tenney as a regular were canceled on all four major networks.[7]
From 2005 to 2012, Tenney starred as Fritz Howard, the husband of Kyra Sedgwick's character Brenda Leigh Johnson on TNT's The Closer and its spin-off Major Crimes.[8] Later, he went on to portray Dr. Simon Craig, a love interest of Sally Field's character Nora Walker, on Brothers & Sisters.[9] In 2013, he starred with Rebecca Romijn in TNT's King & Maxwell, as Sean King, a former Secret Service agent and lawyer who now works as a private investigator.[10] The series was canceled after a single season. In 2014, he was cast in a recurring role on Shonda Rhimes' drama series Scandal.[11]
Tenney also appeared in several films. He starred as Benbrook Oil Company CEO villain John Milner in Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home, a lead in 1993's "Watch It", and as Matthew Perry's best friend in Fools Rush In.[12] In addition, Tenney has appeared in the following films in small roles: Tombstone, Beverly Hills Cop III, Nixon, Music from Another Room, and the 2009 remake of the horror film The Stepfather.[13] He also appeared in the John Cameron Mitchell film, Rabbit Hole.[14] He portrayed Martin Jordan in the 2011 superhero film Green Lantern.[15]
Personal life
Tenney was married to actress Teri Hatcher from 1994 to 2003; they have a daughter, Emerson Rose Tenney, born on November 10, 1997.[16][17] He married producer Leslie Urdang on June 16, 2012.[18]
