Jouko Juhani Järvinen (May 9, 1935 – May 31, 1984) was a Finnish speed skater, allround world champion and world record holder on 1500m.

He was born in Tuulos and died in Helsinki. He was the father of Timo Järvinen.

International championships

Järvinen won a gold medal at the 1959 World Allround Speed Skating Championships for Men in Oslo.[1] He received a silver medal at the 1959 European Speed Skating Championships in Gothenburg.

He competed in three Olympic games, where his best result was the 4th place on 1500m at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo.

World record and Adelskalender

Järvinen set a world record on 1500m (2:06.3) in 1959. This record lasted seven years, until it was beaten by Ard Schenk in 1966.[2]

He reigned on top of the Adelskalender ranking table during two distinct periods in 1959 and 1960.

Awards

Järvinen was elected Finnish Sportspersonality of the year 1959.
