The 2020 presidential campaign of Julián Castro, former United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, was formally launched on January 12, 2019. Castro was the fourth office-holding Democrat to formally announce a campaign in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, following Congressman John Delaney, State Senator Richard Ojeda, and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.[3]

If elected, Castro would become the first Hispanic or Latino president of the United States.[4] Castro would also be the first president whose highest experience was as a cabinet secretary since former President Herbert Hoover.[5]

Castro served as the mayor of his native San Antonio, Texas from 2009 until he joined President Barack Obama's cabinet in 2014 as the 16th United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. He was mentioned as a possible running mate for Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign; Virginia Senator Tim Kaine was ultimately selected.[6][7] On January 12, 2019, Castro announced he is running in the 2020 presidential election.[8]

Announcement

Castro formed a presidential exploratory committee on December 12, 2018.[9] Exactly one month later, Castro officially announced his presidential bid at a rally in San Antonio.[10] His brother, Congressman Joaquín Castro, and their mother introduced him at the rally.[11]
