The Liberal Popular Alliance – Autonomies (Italian: Alleanza Liberalpopolare – Autonomie , ALA) is a centrist and liberal political party in Italy, active mainly through its parliamentary group in the Senate[1][2] and its sub-group in the Chamber of Deputies[3] of the Italian Parliament. Its president is Denis Verdini, a senator from Tuscany.

ALA members are often known as Verdiniani, from the name of their leader, who was formerly a long-time member and national coordinator of three successive centre-right parties led by Silvio Berlusconi (Forza Italia, The People of Freedom and Forza Italia) until July 2015, when he broke with Berlusconi and the party in order to support the Renzi Cabinet.[4]

Verdini aims at launching the "Moderates for Renzi", that would eventually include the other centrist parties supporting the government, namely the New Centre-Right, the Union of the Centre and Civic Choice[5][6][7][8][9][10] (the Christian leftist and centrist Solidary Democracy, currently in alliance with the kin Democratic Centre, ruled out any interest in the idea).[11] As of May 2016, ALA looked set to form a joint group in the Chamber with Civic Choice, in order to counter-balance Popular Area (the group composed of the New Centre-Right and the Union of the Centre) within the government coalition.[12][13]

History

The Liberal Popular Alliance emerged from a split from Forza Italia (FI), led by Denis Verdini, who wanted to support the reforms put forward by the Renzi Cabinet, and was joined by senators coming from different centre-right groups, including Great Autonomies and Freedom (GAL), Conservatives and Reformists (CR) and New Centre-Right (NCD).

Lucio Barani, who until then was the leader of the New Italian Socialist Party (NPSI),[14][15] was elected president of the senatorial group. "Autonomies" was added to "Liberal Popular Alliance" as a reference to the presence of two senators of the Movement for the AutonomiesParty of Sicilians (MpA–PdS) in the group.[16] Other than Barani, who continued to be a member of the NPSI, and the two MpA–PdS senators, the other group members were independent from any party affiliation.

Between September and October, four senators and seven deputies left FI and joined Verdini; the deputies formed a joint sub-group with the Associative Movement Italians Abroad named "Liberal Popular Alliance – Autonomies – Associative Movement Italians Abroad.[2][17][18][19] Between December and January 2016, the party was joined by five more senators,[2] notably including Sandro Bondi, another former national coordinator of FI.[20][21] Also in January, three ALA members were elected deputy chairpersons of three Senate committees.[22] A twentieth senator and an eight deputy joined in May.[2][3]

In April 2016 the presence of two senators of the MpA, who had broken ties with FI while joining ALA and are direct members of it,[23] was marked by a new name of the group in the Senate: Liberal Popular Alliance – Autonomies (Movement for the Autonomies).[2]

ALA fielded lists for the 2016 local elections, especially in the South and usually in support of Democratic candidates.[24]
