Sunil Chhetri has scored 50 international goals for India.
Sunil Chhetri is an Indian professional footballer, who represents India at the international level. Currently the captain of India national football team, he is regarded as the most popular footballer and best striker of India.[1] To date, he has represented India 88 times in official matches, scoring 50 goals, and once in an unofficial match, scoring a single goal in that match as well. He is India's all-time top international goalscorer with 50 goals in 88 matches. He is referred to as "goal machine" by Indian media.[2]
Chhetri made his international debut for the national team on 12 June 2005 against arch-rival Pakistan, and scored in his very first match.[1] Chhetri's first international tournament for India was 2007 Nehru Cup where he scored 2 goals against Cambodia in 6-0 win.[3] Chhetri's 50th goal came in his 88th match in a 2–1 victory against Afghanistan in the 2015 SAFF Championship Final; his goal turned out to be the match decider and helped India win their seventh SAFF Championship title.[4] He is also the first Indian footballer to score 50 international goals.[5] Fourteen of his 50 goals came in friendly matches, 13 of those in the SAFF Championships, 8 in the Nehru Cups, 6 in World Cup qualifiers, and 2 in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. The rest have come in AFC Challenge Cup & its qualifiers.[5] His tally of 50 international goals for India puts him in joint 44th position (alongside Robin van Persie, Hwang Sun-hong and Lionel Messi) in the list of footballers who have scored 50 or more international goals for their respective countries.[6]
He also previously appeared thrice for the India U-20 side and scored 2 goals in the 2004 South Asian Games,[7][8] which are not considered as the official ones.
