Lukas Isaac Paul Jutkiewicz (born 28 March 1989) is an English professional footballer who plays as a striker for Burnley. He has previously played for the likes of Swindon Town, Everton, Plymouth Argyle, Huddersfield Town, Motherwell, Coventry City and Middlesbrough.

Club career

Southampton

Jutkiewicz was born in Southampton and joined the Saints Academy as a ten-year-old after playing Tyro League football with Eastleigh Earls and Winsor. He attended Highfield Primary School and also attended The Mountbatten School in Romsey. After three years at the academy, he left but continued to play Tyro League football with Brendon Youth, before signing for Swindon Town.[3]

Swindon Town

Jutkiewicz made his Swindon Town debut at the age of 17, as a substitute in a 2–1 defeat at Swansea's Liberty Stadium in April 2006.[citation needed] A week later, he had his first start in a 2–1 win at Scunthorpe United. Jutkiewicz signed a three year contract in July 2006. He was patient for his introduction to the first team in 2006–07, but finally made his first league start of the season in Swindon's 2–0 defeat to Mansfield Town. The next game, against top of the table Walsall, saw Jutkiewicz score his first senior goal, helping Swindon to a 2–0 victory.[4] He went on to score four more goals during the 2006–07 season to help the club gain promotion to League One.

Everton

On 17 March 2007, Jutkiewicz joined Everton for a £1m fee.[5][6] He joined up with the club for pre-season training in July 2007, and was handed the number 27 shirt – previously worn by Andy van der Meyde.

In January 2008, Plymouth Argyle signed Jutkiewicz on loan until the end of the 2007–08 season. Here he worked under his former boss at Swindon, Paul Sturrock.[7] He made his debut for the Pilgrims three days later in their 3–2 FA Cup victory over Hull City, coming on as an 85th minute substitute.[8]

The 2008–09 season saw Jutkiewicz make his Everton debut, coming on as a substitute in a 3–0 victory over Sunderland in December 2008. The following month he was again sent out on loan, to Huddersfield Town, until the end of the season.[9] He made his first start for Huddersfield in a 1–0 win over Leeds United in February 2009 but made little impression overall, failing to find the net in his loan spell.

Motherwell

In August 2009, Jutkiewicz joined Scottish Premier League side Motherwell on loan until January 2010. Jutkiewicz scored his first goal for the Fir Park outfit against Falkirk. In January 2010, his Motherwell loan period to was extended to the end of the season.[10] On 5 May, he won the man-of-the-match award in the highest-scoring match in SPL history against Hibernian[11] He scored an outstanding injury-time goal from a tight angle to make it 6–6 and keep alive his team's hopes of a Europa League spot.[12] He had been playing through a knee injury incurred three months earlier and was praised for his determination by then-manager Craig Brown who also described the goal as "van Basten-like".[11][13] However, it was not considered for goal-of-the-season because the award had already been presented to Anthony Stokes a month before the end of the season.[14] On 9 May 2010, just four days after that memorable game, Jutkiewicz converted a penalty in injury time to get a 3–3 draw against Rangers at Ibrox.[15] He netted a total of 12 goals during his time with Motherwell.

Coventry City

Jutkiewicz was transferred to Coventry City for an undisclosed fee on 26 July 2010, signing a three-year contract.[16] "We are delighted to have Lukas on board and this adds more strength to the squad," said manager Aidy Boothroyd. "We wanted to enhance our attacking options and this will certainly do that. He is at the right age too, to grow and develop with Coventry City."[17] He made his competitive debut on 7 August 2010 in a 2–0 home win against Portsmouth,[18] and scored his first goal for the club one week later, scoring a stoppage time equaliser in a 2–2 draw at Watford.[19] The penultimate day of the August transfer window saw Middlesbrough FC make an undisclosed offer for the striker who scored against them 3 days earlier but this offer was rejected by the club because Andy Thorn stated that Lukas was a key part of his plans for the season.

Middlesbrough

Jutkiewicz joined Middlesbrough in an emergency loan deal on 14 January 2012.[20] The loan was instigated as a means to allow Jutkiewicz to play in that day's game against Burnley because a permanent transfer had not been completed in time.[21] Following the game against Burnley, the club confirmed the permanent transfer of Jutkiewicz for a fee in the region of £1.3m.[22] Jutkiewicz scored his first goal for Middlesbrough in an FA Cup fourth round replay against Sunderland. He followed this on the 14 February 2012, by scoring his first league goal for Middlesbrough in a 2–1 win against Nottingham Forest.[23]

After an injury setback at the start of the 2012/2013 season, Jutkiewicz scored his first two goals of the season for Boro, in his first start of the season against Blackburn Rovers F.C, in a 2–1 victory away from home. He followed this performance up with another brace at home to Derby to leave him with four goals from three starts. Jutkiewicz scored his fifth league goal of the season at home to Sheffield Wednesday in a 3–1 victory on 9 November 2012.[24] His 6th goal of the season came in Boro's 1–2 loss to Leeds at Elland Road. Jutkiewicz scored the only goal of the game in the 1–0 home win over Blackburn. 'The Juke' added his 8th and final league goal of the season in the 3–1 away defeat to Derby on New Year's Day. He then added two to his season tally with a double in the FA Cup win against Aldershot at home. Jutkiewicz ended the season with 10 goals overall, eight of which were in the league.

Jutkiewicz was given the number 9 shirt, previously worn by Marvin Emnes who moved to 10, before the beginning of the 2013/14 season. He scored his first goal of the season in the shock 2–1 defeat to Accrington Stanley in the Capital One Cup. Despite his claims for Boro's only goal on the opening day fixture against Leicester, the goal was credited as a Sean St Ledger own goal.

On 28 January 2014, Jutkiewicz joined Bolton Wanderers on loan for the remainder of the 2013–14 season.[25] He made his debut the same day, coming off the bench in a 2–1 defeat to QPR.[26] He scored his first goal for the club in a 2–2 draw with Bournemouth on 8 February 2014.[27] He finished the season with seven goals in twenty appearances, becoming a fan favourite.

Burnley

Jutkiewicz joined newly promoted Premier League side Burnley in a £2.25m deal in July 2014. £1.25m is the initial upfront fee, £0.25m performance based, £0.25m goals bonuses, £0.5m depending whether or not Burnley stay in the Premier League. Jutkiewicz went on to score six goals in as many games in Burnley's pre-season campaign[28]

International career

In addition to his country of birth, England, Jutkiewicz is also eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland through his Irish grandmother, and Poland by way of his Polish grandfather, although the player has made no decision on which country to represent.[29]
