Malta Financial Services Authority is an autonomous government agency in Malta responsible for financial regulation, supervision and registration of banks, insurance companies, stock exchanges and securities dealers, as well as other financial intermediaries in Malta.[1][2]

History

The MFSA was created in 2002, it has taken over those supervisory functions that were previously conducted by the Central Bank of Malta, the Malta Stock Exchange and the Malta Financial Services Center.[3]

Mandate

The MFSA is guided by Malta Financial Service Authority Act.[4][5]

The MFSA can conduct investigation for breach of regulations, it can issue warnings as well as can impose penalty or cancel the license.[6]

Responsibilities

  • Regulates financial institutions.
  • Issues license to companies involved in all forms of financial services.
  • Supervises investment, trust, and insurance business.
  • Maintains Malta’s registry of companies.
  • Issues guidance through circulars as and when required.
  • Coordinates with relevant parties on legislative matters.
  • Provides training to staff in Malta and abroad.
  • Educates and protects consumers.
  • Works in tandem with international law enforcement agencies to combat financial crimes.
