Marģers Skujenieks (22 June 1886, Riga - 1941, Moscow) held the office of Prime Minister of Latvia twice from 19 December 1926 – 23 January 1928 and 6 December 1931 – 23 March 1933.[1]
Life
Skujenieks political career began as a member of the Latvian People's Council (Tautas padome), who declared the independence of Latvia on 18 November 1918.
In April 1920 he was elected a member of the Constituent Assembly (Satversmes sapulce). Then took place in October 1922 he was elected Member of the Parliament (Saeima), where he represented then to May 1934, the interests of the Latvian Social Democratic Workers' Party (Latvijas socialdemokratiska Strādnieku Partija). On 19 December 1926 he was appointed as the successor of Arturs Alberings the first social democratic prime minister. As such, he was in his last until January 23, 1928 term at the same time interior minister. Successor as Prime Minister was on the following day Pēteris Juraševskis. During his tenure, a trade agreement with the Soviet Union was closed in 1927. [4].
After the parliamentary elections of October 1931, he was the successor of Kārlis Ulmanis on December 6, 1931 Prime Minister again. This office Skujenkies held this time from until 23 March 1933rd At times he was on 21 February 1932 to the end of his tenure also Finance Minister and acting Foreign Minister temporarily. On 5 February 1932, he graduated in Riga with the USSR a nonaggression pact successor as Prime Minister was Ādolfs Bļodnieks. In the erected by Ulmanis on March 17, 1934 authoritarian regime, he was Deputy to the 16 June 1938 Prime Minister. He was also Chairman of the Sports Association as well as President of the National Olympic Committee. Later, he refused in particular after the merger of the offices of the Ministers and the President in the person of Ulmanis in 1936 by amending the Constitution of Latvia (Satversme) the Government increasingly from. After the occupation of Latvia by the Red Army in 1940, he was arrested and interned in the Soviet Union, where he died soon. [2]
