Mattar M'Boge (born 21 June 1980) is a football coach and former player who is the current head coach of the Gambia national under-17 football team.[1][2]

Career

M’Boge started his coaching career in 2004 whilst studying at Loughborough University, where he also gained his MSc. in Multimedia & Computing as well as his BSc. in Computing & Management and where he coached his teams to consecutive national league titles between 2005 and 2007.

Since 2007, he has worked with several Academies across the UK, before coaching the reserves at Harrow Borough FC[3] winning a national league and cup double in 2010,[4] then Hampton & Richmond Borough FC, with his most recent position as Academy Coach at Barnet FC.

He was appointed as Head Coach of Real de Banjul F.C. in April 2014[5][6] taking over from Belgian coach Franky van de Velde and successfully led the team in impressive fashion to win the GFF First Division championship[7] with two games to spare, setting the record for most goals scored in a season and number of points. The run to the league championship included some high-scoring victories[8][9][10][11][12] and was notable as he took over with the team in fourth place following a six-point deduction for fielding ineligible players.[13]

He was part of the national team setup[14] that won an invitational tournament in Mbour, Senegal in November 2014[15] before he was appointed U17 Head Coach[16] in April 2015 on a two-year contract. Prior to this, he was assigned as Assistant Head Coach for the national team[17] for a 1-0 friendly win over Mauritania which was the first game in over 18 months for the Gambia national football team.[18] He continued in his role as Assistant Head Coach for the CHAN team which was knocked out in the qualifying round for CHAN 2016 by rivals Senegal losing 1-3[19] in Dakar and 0-1[20] in Banjul.

He was promoted to work with the senior national team as assistant coach,[21][22] before being interviewed for the head coach role when it became vacant[23] and finally being confirmed in a revamped backroom team[24] following the appointment of Sang Ndong as Head Coach.

He has also appeared as a television and radio pundit, analysing the World Cup in 2014 and African Nations Cup in 2015 for national television station GRTS.[25]
