Michelle Kosinski (born May 6, 1974) is an Emmy award winning American journalist who most recently served as Senior Diplomatic Correspondent covering the State Department for CNN.[1] Prior to that, she covered the Obama White House. She was a foreign correspondent for NBC News based in London (2010–2014); before that she was a correspondent based in Miami (2005–2009).[2]

In her career she has travelled to more than 60 countries, including Afghanistan during the US war, Pakistan after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, and Haiti following the earthquake in 2010.

She has covered numerous world events such as the Arab Spring, terrorist attacks and plots in Europe, economic crises in Spain and Greece, the death of Nelson Mandela, Hurricane Katrina, and mass shootings in the United States. Kosinski covered the Trump-Putin summit in Helsinki and the Trump-Kim summit in Hanoi.

Among stories Kosinski has broken are the Obama White House's calling the fight against ISIS a war, details of the Trump administration's talks with North Korea, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson being shamed by the White House, Tillerson's refusal to support Ivanka Trump on a foreign trip, and allegations of misuse of Diplomatic Security under Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

While at NBC news she extensively covered the trials of Amanda Knox and Oscar Pistorius, the Virginia Tech tragedy, the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and the 2008 US presidential election, for which she won an Emmy.

In her years of far-flung travels, she has ventured into jungles, sailed on the Amazon and the Nile, climbed into the burial chamber of the Great Pyramid, viewed the northern lights above the Arctic Circle, ran to safety following a strong aftershock in Haiti, entered smuggling tunnels in Gaza, lived on the bayou during the BP oil spill, attended "gladiator school" in Rome, attempted to learn to surf with a rogue-wave hunter in South Africa, slept in a haunted hotel in Northern England, and drove into rural Mexico to interview "patient one" during the Swine Flu outbreak in Mexico.

In 2019, the Columbia Journalism review said of CNN and Kosinski's work: "But I also know that that’s not all of CNN, and not only because the analysis, during the day and in the evening, is interspersed with straight news. When I covered foreign affairs for BuzzFeed News’ national security desk (RIP), I attended the State Department press briefings. And I’d see Michelle Kosinski, CNN senior diplomatic correspondent, whose questions to the State spokesperson at the time, Heather Nauert, were hard hitting, pointed and unrelenting."


Career overview

Kosinski began work in broadcast journalism in Rockford, Illinois for WIFR while earning her BA and MA simultaneously from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, as part of the Accelerated Masters Program, and was named "On Your Side" Reporter, investigating viewer problems and complaints. Leaving WIFR, she moved to Charlotte, North Carolina at WSOC-TV and founded the Piedmont Bureau, covering nine counties. In 2001, she was voted the Best Reporter in Charlotte by readers of the city's arts and entertainment magazine. In Fall of 2001, she left WSOC-TV for WTVJ in Miami. She is a 2003 Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards Craft Winner for reporting on Haitian immigrants and was named Woman of the Year in 2005 by Women in Communications of South Florida.[3]

She was hired by NBC News in 2005.

In 2010, Kosinski was named a foreign correspondent and moved from NBC's Southeast Bureau to London.[4]

In 2014, she became a White House correspondent for CNN.[5][6]

CNN named Kosinski Senior Diplomatic Correspondent in 2017, based at the US Department of State.

In August 2005, while covering the Natalee Holloway disappearance in Aruba, NBC arranged an interview with the director of Aruban prisons and a tour of suspect Joran van der Sloot's prison. During the tour, she ran into van der Sloot and conducted an off-camera interview. Prison director Fred Maduro appeared live on MSNBC and admitted that he offered her the tour. After Van der Sloot's attorneys called for a hearing on the matter, NBC declined to air the footage.

Rolling Stone magazine named Kosinski to its famous "Hot List" in 2005, as "Hot Reporter." [7]

In 2009, Kosinski purchased a $5.6 million, 12,000-square-foot (1,100 m2) home in Coral Gables, Florida.[8]

In Washington, DC Kosinski is active in supporting the arts, the Washington Ballet, autism research, and sits on the board of the Friends of the American University of Afghanistan.

Kosinski is also a resident of Switzerland, splitting her time between the US and Europe. She speaks fluent French.

She has been a vegan since age 16.

Education

Kosinski attended and graduated with highest honors from St. Charles Borromeo School[9], and graduated as valedictorian from Holy Cross High School. She was active in ballet and was cheerleading captain.

She simultaneously earned bachelor's and master's degrees in the accelerated program from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.[10] Originally in the magazine writing program, she later switched to the broadcasting division.[11] In college Kosinski was a member of the Northwestern University Dance Ensemble.

Personal life

Kosinski was born in Willingboro, New Jersey, and grew up in nearby Cinnaminson Township, New Jersey, both suburbs of Philadelphia.[12] She is one of four children of Jeanette, a chemist, and Robert, a retired biologist who worked for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. While working as a television news photographer and reporter in Charlotte, North Carolina, she also performed with the award-winning Piedmont Players theater group, in roles such as Elvira in Blithe Spirit and Suzanne in Don't Dress for Dinner.[13]

In August 2013, Kosinski announced her engagement to retired British investment banker and philanthropist Kimbell Duncan.[14][15] They married on August 9, 2014, in an American-British themed wedding attended by Wolf Blitzer, Dana Bash and other television personalities. Kosinski wore a crown of flowers in a nod to her Polish heritage, while Duncan wore a kilt in his family's tartan. [16]

They split their time between the US and Switzerland.


Community

For several years, Kosinski has served on the executive host committee for Amigos For Kids,[citation needed] a charitable organization based in Miami. Kosinski has volunteered for and supported numerous community organizations. She has sought out and highlighted innovative charitable work around the United States, as a regular contributor to Nightly News' "Making a Difference" series, which has in turn positively impacted those efforts.[17][18]

Kosinski is a member of the Catholic community in Georgetown, Washington, D.C.

She currently serves on the board of the Friends of the American University of Afghanistan, and in 2019 provided a full scholarship to a young Afghan woman.
