The Apostolic Prefecture of Ulaanbaatar (Latin: Praefectura Apostolica Ulaanbaatarensis) is a Roman Catholic Latin apostolic prefecture (pre-diocesan missionary jurisdiction) located in Mongolia.
It is exempt, i.e. directly subject to the Holy See, not part of any ecclesiastical province.
Its cathedral episcopal see is the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, in the Mongolian national capital, Ulaanbaatar.
History
- Established on March 14, 1922 as Mission “sui iuris” of Outer Mongolia (Chinese: 外蒙古), on territory split off from the then Apostolic Vicariate of Central Mongolia (Chinese: 中蒙古)
- Renamed in 1924 as Mission sui iuris of Urga (or Ulanbator) (Chinese: 庫倫)
- Promoted on July 8, 2002 as Apostolic Prefecture of Ulaanbaatar (Chinese: 乌兰巴托),still not entitled to a titular bishop.
