Monty Lewis is the head football coach for Friends University in Wichita, Kansas.[1] He accumulated 100 wins in just 15 years as a head coach and has one of the highest winning percentages of any active coach in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.[2]
Coaching career
Before coaching at Friends, Lewis was the head coach for the Southwestern College Moundbuilders[3] and led the team to a record of 60 wins and 32 losses during his tenure to become the "all-time winningest coach in school history"[4] including a 1996 Wheat Bowl victory against Baker University.[5] In terms of head coach winning percentage at Southwestern, Lewis ranks #6 overall.
After the 1997 regular season, his team played in the NAIA Football National Championship, losing 53–28 to Doane College.[6]
In 1998, his team at Southwestern advanced to the second round of the National Championship, defeating the Lindenwood Lions 12–10 in the first round and losing 52–6 to Si Tanka (SD).[7]
For the 1999 NAIA Football National Championship, the team lost in the first round to Northwestern Oklahoma State by a score of 44–10.[8]
Playing career
As a player for the Southwestern College Moundbuilders, Lewis was an NAIA All-American in 1983 and 1984[9] where he played for head coaches Dennis Franchione and Charlie Cowdrey.,[10] including the 1982 Sunflower Bowl victory.[11]
