Mount Hebron High School is a public high school located in Ellicott City, Maryland. It is part of the Howard County Public School System.

About the school

Mt. Hebron opened in 1965 as a junior high school. When Patapsco Middle School opened nearby in 1969, Mt. Hebron was converted into a high school. [2] Mt. Hebron was ranked 671st in Newsweek magazine's "America's Best High Schools" listing in 2006 and was ranked 598th in 2007.[1] It has a 92.4% graduation rate and its latest renovations were completed in 2011. [2]

Mount Hebron High School is named after the nearby 21,252 acre slave plantation and manor. Mt. Hebron is a stone home built by Col John Worthington Dorsey for his son Thomas Beale Dorsey in 1808. [3]

Geography

Mt. Hebron High School is located in suburban Howard County, approximately 10 miles west of Baltimore. It is at the intersection of St. Johns Lane and Route 99, Old Frederick Road, just west of U.S. 29 and north of I-70.

Sports

In 1989-90, Daniel Carroll of Mt. Hebron won the County, Region, and 3A State championships in the pole vault for both indoor and outdoor track and field.

Mt. Hebron boys' soccer team won back-to-back state championships in 1999 and 2000. The 2000 team was ranked #20 in the nation in 2000.[citation needed] In 2006, the boys' varsity soccer team won the county championship, 2A/3A regional championship, and the 3A state championship. They ended the season with an undefeated 17-0-4 record, the best in school history.

Mt. Hebron had the #1 girls' varsity lacrosse team in the country for five of the past six years. The team won 15 of 16 possible state championships from 1991-2007 and won every possible Howard County championship since the sport's inception. They also hold the national record for consecutive wins, 107.[citation needed]

In 2006, the girls' cross country team won the 3A state championship in cross country in a time of 19:49.11. The 2008 boys' cross country team won the Maryland Regional 2A Championship by placing all seven runners in the top 13. They followed that up by winning the Maryland State Championship with 57 points, 48 more than the 2nd place team. The 2009 boys' cross country team won the Howard County Championship and Maryland Regional 3A Championship.

In 2008, Mt. Hebron's marching unit became the two millionth performers to march across Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. Also that year, the girls' varsity basketball team won the state championship with an undefeated record of 28-0.

In 2009, the lancer drill/dance team won the county-level competition. They became the Division 1 Maryland state champions in the high kick division at the MAPDA competition in 2009 as well. The dance team has also received first place in the National Music Festival competition with superior ratings every year since 2005.

In 2012, the lancer drill/dance team won the state championship MAPDA Competition in Division 1 Short Pom, High Kick and Total Package categories. The team won many county competitions throughout the season as well.

In 2012 and 2015 Mt. Hebron cheerleading team won counties.

Mt. Hebron has a nationally ranked academic economics program. Its large AP Economics program receives more than 15% of the scores of '5' in Maryland annually. Sixty-six percent of Mt. Hebron's AP Economics students score '5s', and 97% score a '4' or above.

Additionally, Mt. Hebron's National Economics Challenge team won the Maryland state championship in 2010, 2011, and 2014, and was the state runner-up in 2012 and 2013. Both the 2010 and 2011 teams went on to the national semi-final competition and the 2010 team competed in the national finals in Manhattan.

Mt. Hebron's speech and debate teams have also been highly competitive over the years. Its Mock Trial team has won or shared six county championships between 2005 and 2013. Its Model United Nations squad has won many individual and team awards over the years, including several Best Delegation awards at local and national tournaments between 2008 and 2013.

Notable alumni

Racism incident and protest

In February 2016, a student attending the school published a racist video to the internet, in which he ranted against the Black Lives Matter movement, saying "who the (expletive) cares about some black man who dies? They're an inferior race, OK?" He also claimed that Abraham Lincoln was "a traitor to the white race."[5] In response to this, about 150 students staged a protest to show their opposition to the racist attitudes expressed in the video.[6]
