New Hope-Solebury High School is a high school located at 182 West Bridge Street in New Hope, Pennsylvania. The school's mascot is the Lion, and its colors are royal blue and gold. It is located in the New Hope-Solebury School District. The school houses grades 9 through 12. The school has approximately 500 students. They are ranked number two in the state by the U.S. News and World report, and 210th in the nation. The current principal is Charles Malone.

History

New Hope-Solebury High School first started as a one-building school in the late 19th century. The school housed roughly 20 students from grades K-12 and educated them on academic subjects from math and science to agriculture and farming. However as the township of Solebury grew, the need for a larger school was evident. Thus the building of the New Hope-Solebury School system began. Currently, the district has four school buildings and hundreds of acres of land.

Academics

New Hope-Solebury High School, although small, offers a wide variety of courses for its students from which to choose. The school is divided into departments for mathematics, science, social studies/history, foreign languages, English, fine arts, business education, gifted students, health and physical education, information technology, and practical arts and technology. AP Courses are offered in twelve subjects: Biology, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Computer Science, English Composition, English Literature, European History, Music Theory, Physics, Statistics, Studio Art, and U.S. History.

The average SAT scores for New Hope-Solebury in reading, math, and writing are respectively: 555, 564, and 548. [1]

As of 2014, New Hope-Solebury High School was rated third-best high school in the state of Pennsylvania by US News and World Report. [2]

Students also may take courses at Middle Bucks Institute of Technology, offering them more technological educations. There also is a senior program that allows students to learn either anatomy or engineering at MBIT, under the direction of a Penn State University professor, and earn PSU credits.

Performing arts

New Hope-Solebury High school offers a performing arts program that allows students to sing, dance, act, and express themselves in a variety of ways. The Stephen J. Buck auditorium houses roughly 500 people and is used for the Mask & Zany theater productions, one act festival, comedy nights, movies nights, band, choir, orchestra, assembly, and class meetings.

Mask & Zany Theatre Club is a performing arts club for students that performs roughly five times a year. They produce a variety of classic plays, such as Macbeth and Much Ado About Nothing, and modern musicals like Suessical and Once On This Island.

The New Hope-Solebury Wind ensemble is a group of musicians giving concerts several times every year. The group has participated in competitions in Disney World, Toronto, and Chicago.[3] The ensemble also has a jazz band.

The choir is made up of approximately 100 students from grades 9-12. The chamber choir is a group of roughly 20 students. While the choir is open to all students who are interested in participating, students must audition to be accepted into the chamber choir. Both choirs perform at concerts and competitions in various locations.[3]

The New Hope Solebury orchestra, which consists of the bass, cello, viola and violin, has a repertoire ranging from classical music to modern Broadway songs, also has received many awards at competitions, including best overall orchestra. They have played in San Francisco, Toronto, Hersheypark, Chicago, Disney World, Disney Land, Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom, and others. [3]

Clubs and Activities

The school offers a number of student clubs and extracurricular activities.

New Hope-Solebury High school is a part of the PIAA (Pennsylvania interscholastic athletic association) and part of the bicentennial athletic league. NHS competes in cross country, golf, field hockey, volleyball, soccer, basketball, wrestling, cheerleading, baseball, football, softball, lacrosse, tennis, and track. The girls' soccer team has gone to the PIAA state quarterfinal, and the boys' soccer team made it to the PIAA State Finals in 2006. In 2010, the boys' soccer team won the PIAA State Finals, after beating the Mercyhurst Prep team with a score of 2-1. The boys' baseball team made it the PIAA state final tournament in 2010.
