North Central Timor Regency (Indonesian: Kabupaten Timor Tengah Utara) is a regency in East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia. Established in 1958,[1] the regency has its seat (capital) in Kefamenanu.
The regional economy is underdeveloped with the main activity in many village areas being subsistence agriculture. Poverty is widespread. Infrastructure, particularly, is underdeveloped with local inhabitants noting that infrastructure in the nearby Oecussi enclave, part of Timor Leste, is much better developed.[2]
Development issues
There are high rates of poverty in the region. There are acute shortages of clean water for household use in the dry season in rural areas. The shortages exacerbate other factors which contribute to poor health, such as diarrhea and skin diseases, in villages in the regency. Stunting and undernourishment of children is common as well: one survey conducted by an international NGO (non-government organisation) reported that 57% of children were stunted and 44% were undernourished.[3]
Administration
The regency is divided into 24 districts (kecamatan), tabulated below with their 2010 Census population.
