The Old Scripps Building in La Jolla, California, built in 1909, is the oldest oceanographic research building in continuous use in the United States.[2] It was the first building of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the nation's first oceanographic institute, founded in 1903. The institution is now part of the University of California, San Diego.
The building was designed by Irving Gill, an early Modernist architect. It is an early example of reinforced concrete construction techniques.[2]
The Old Scripps Building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1982.[2][5]
