The painted finch (Emblema pictum) is a common species of estrildid finch found in Australia. It is also known as the painted firetail or the painted firetail finch. It is the only species in the genus Emblema.

It has an estimated global extent of occurrence of 1,000,000 km2. It is found in semi-desert areas, grassland and subtropical (lowland) dry grassland. The IUCN has classified the species as being of least concern.

Origin

Origin and phylogeny has been obtained by Antonio Arnaiz-Villena et al..[2] Estrildinae may have originated in India and dispersed thereafter (towards Africa and Pacific Ocean habitats).
