Until the 1930s the Chinese were kept in certain areas, creating Chinese parts of towns and cities in Java. Pecinan's are similar to the Jewish ghettoes in Europe and means Chinatown in English. One well-known Pecinan commercial hub in Jakarta is Glodok (裹踱刻).
