Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez (born August 9, 1972), better known as Juanes, is a Colombian musician who was a member of heavy metal band Ekhymosis and is now a solo artist. According to Universal Music Group, Juanes' record sales, combined with those of the group's, have surpassed 15 million. Raised in Medellín, Colombia, Juanes began playing guitar at age seven. He started his first band, Ekhymosis, in 1988, which experienced commercial success in Colombia but had difficulty achieving popularity outside of the country. In 2000, Juanes released his solo debut album, Fíjate Bien, which earned him three Latin Grammys. His follow-up album, Un Día Normal, was released in 2002 and was later certified platinum in multiple countries throughout Latin America. Juanes' third album, Mi Sangre, achieved success due to the single "La Camisa Negra". He has since released La Vida... Es Un Ratico (2007) and P.A.R.C.E. (2010). On May 29, 2012 Juanes released the album Juanes MTV Unplugged. He has won seventeen Latin Grammy Awards and one Grammy Award. Juanes received the BMI President's Award at the 2010 BMI Latin Awards. Ekhymosis was a Colombian rock band formed by Juan Esteban "Juanes" Aristizábal Vásquez, along with friends Andrés García, Fernando Tobón|Fernando "Toby" Tobón and José David Lopera from Medellín. The band was created in 1988 with heavy influences from Metallica and other important metal acts of the 80s, as well as some popular Latino music. Even since their beginning as a metal band, Ekhymosis (a Greek word, meaning "bruise") showed the same pro-Latino lyrics as Kraken. After some live performances to become known in their city (and more regions of Colombia), the band recorded a demo of two songs, which described the violence in Medellín and the injustice of innocent deaths and other problems in Colombia. The demo sold out (thanks to friends and family of the band), and they decided to record a second. This time Ekhymosis had luck: In the studio was a Codiscos representative; she heard and liked the demo and the band signed with that label. In 1993 saw the release of Niño Gigante, a heavy metal album that included one of the band's most well known songs, "Solo". It was recorded before a live audience at the New World Symphony Center in Miami Beach, Florida, on February 1, 2012 and was released by Universal Music Latino on May 29, 2012. The album includes featured performances by the Spanish composer Joaquín Sabina and the Brazilian singer Paula Fernandes. The album features rearranged takes on Juanes' hit songs like "Me Enamora", La Camisa Negra and "A Dios le Pido". The first single of the live album was released on March 5, 2012 called La Señal, currently a hit in Latin America. The second single was "Me Enamora" with new instrumental arrangements, was released two days after of the album's release. Also features three new songs, one of these is a collaboration with Joaquín Sabina. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard Top Latin Albums Chart. The album debuted at the top of digital sales, ranking # 1 for listings iTunes Latino albums in the U.S. and Puerto Rico and # 1 in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, El Salvador and Venezuela. "La Camisa Negra" (English: "The Black Shirt") is a Spanish rock song written by Colombian singer-songwriter Octavio Mesa and recorded by Juanes for his third studio album Mi Sangre. In Latin America, the track was released in 2005 as the third single from Mi Sangre, and in Europe, it was released in 2006 as the album's lead single.The song received mixed reviews from critics and generated controversy when it was used to support neo-fascism in Italy. The single was very successful in Latin America, topping most record charts. "La Camisa Negra" is written in common time in the key of F#minor. The song is carried by an acoustic guitar strum at a moderate 100 beats per minute, with an accompanying melody on the electric guitar. The lyrics are organized in the common verse–chorus form, and Juanes' range spans around an octave and a half, from C#4 to F#5. In the United States, the song performed quite well for a Spanish-language recording reaching number eighty-nine on the Billboard Hot 100.
