Location
Rescue Row is the honorary name of the section of Alabama Street between 15th and 16th streets. Its residing organizations and their respective addresses: San Francisco Animal Care & Control, 1200 15th St., San Francisco SPCA, 201 Alabama St., Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, 255 Alabama St. (First and Second Floors), Northern California Family Dog Rescue, 255 Alabama St. (Third and Fourth Floors).[1]
History
This city block has always been the nickname of the heavy animal welfare location. It was not until May 6, 2014 that Rescue Row was approved by the City and Country of San Francisco and finally recognized as a San Francisco staple.[2] Thousands of homeless animals find their forever home on Rescue Row.
Attractions and characteristics
Rescue Row itself is a one city block long street running south from 15th Street to 16th on Alabama Street. It is parallel to and in between Harrison and Florida streets. It is roughly between Mission District and the Potrero Hill.
In 1868, banker James Sloan Hutchinson, founded the San Francisco SPCA.[3] Other notable welfare organization followed suit. Now it is 2014 and Rescue Row represents working together to find new beginnings for all of our rescued animals.
Events
On May 31, 2014, Rescue Row held a ribbon cutting ceremony. [4] Hundred of animal lovers and potential adopters turned out for the inauguration of Rescue Row. The ribbon cutting and pet parade coincided with the official kickoff of the Maddie’s© Pet Adoption Days, which ran from May 31st to June 1st. During that weekend, adoption fees were waived for all animals! [5] Dr. Jennifer Scarlett, Co-President of the San Francisco SPCA, spoke about Rescue Row: “When people think of pet adoption in San Francisco, we want Rescue Row to be the first destination that comes to mind. There are hundreds of animals to choose from at the four Rescue Row organizations. If you want to adopt a pet, there is no better place!”
