Azúcar Moreno were selected internally by Radiotelevisión Española (RTVE), the Spanish broadcaster, to represent the country at the contest in Yugoslavia with the song "Bandido".

At Eurovision

Ázucar Moreno were set to perform first on the night of the contest, preceding Greece. A notorious mishap occurred at the start of the performance. The orchestra and the recorded playback began the song out of sync, which caused the singers to miss their cue. The singers left the stage after a few seconds, and no explanation was given at the time. After a few uneasy moments, the music began correctly and the song was performed in full. At the close of the voting the song had received 96 points, placing 5th in a field of 22.
