Stewart's Castle (Washington DC)
Stewart's Castle was a mansion in Washington D.C., located on the North side of Dupont Circle between Connecticut Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue. It owed its nickname to its turreted facade on Massachusetts Avenue.
Stewart Castle was built in 1873 by Senator William Morris Stewart, on a design by prominent Washington architect Adolf Cluss. It is notable for having been one of the earliest locations of the Chinese Legation in the U.S., to which Stewart rented the house from 1886 to 1993.
The mansion was sold by Stewart to Senator William A. Clark, who razed it in 1901.[1] The site remained vacant for a generation, until the construction in 1923 of a branch of the Riggs National Bank (now PNC Financial Services).
