History

The main feature of this area is the rich minings. The mining activity dates from 600 B.C. In antiquity Stratonicea city was built in this place. The recent archaeological findings helped to disclose where Stratonicea was built. Stratoni built many years later in 19th century and its first residents was the miners of the local mines. After the Asia Minor Disaster the population increased due to the arrival of refugees from Asia Minor. In 1932 the village suffered great damages from the earthquake in the nearby Ierissos.[2][3] Nowadays the mining activity continues to be the main occupation of the residents.
