Personal life
Hitchcock is the son of former Chelsea goalkeeper Kevin Hitchcock.[2] While attending Kingshott School in Hitchin, he was a member of the Watford academy along with classmate Ben Nugent, combining his studies and appearances for the school's first XI with his Academy commitments. When his father was appointed as goalkeeping coach at Blackburn Rovers as part of Mark Hughes' coaching team in 2004, Hitchcock and his family moved north and Tom transferred to the Blackburn youth teams.
Football career
Blackburn Rovers
Hitchcock progressed through the youth system at Rovers academy after officially joining in 2007, after his original recommendation by his father, who was then goalkeeping coach at the club. He made his break into the Rovers reserve team in 2009, scoring his first goal that year.[3] He progressed into a team which already contained the future England centre-back Phil Jones.
On 2 February 2012, Hitchcock had his contract cancelled by Blackburn Rovers.[4]
Plymouth Argyle (loan)
After establishing himself a regular in the Blackburn Rovers reserve team, it was revealed in the July 2011–12 summer transfer window that newly relegated League Two team Plymouth Argyle were interested in taking Hitchcock on loan.[5] Later that week it was revealed that Argyle would attempt to take Hitchcock on trial so he would be able to play in a pre-season friendly versus Bristol City.[6] It was revealed that he had been taken on trial in time to be registered for the friendly.[7] Hitchcock played and scored in this friendly game.[8] Hitchcock signed for Argyle on an initial three-month loan period, expiring 31 October 2011, in an attempt to gain regular first team football.[9]
On 6 August 2011, Hitchcock made his debut in professional football against Shrewsbury Town.[10]
Queens Park Rangers
On 4 March 2012, he signed a one-year contract with Queens Park Rangers.[11]
On 17 August 2013, Hitchcock made his senior debut for Queens Park Rangers as a substitute for Bobby Zamora in the 83rd minute against Ipswich Town. He scored the only goal of the game in the 90th minute.[12]
Crewe Alexandra (loan)
On 28 November 2013, Hitchcock signed for League One side Crewe Alexandra. He went on to make 6 appearances for the club, scoring 3 goals.[13]
Rotherham United (loan)
On 10 January 2014, Tom joined Rotherham United on a month-long loan.[14] He scored his first goal for the club on his second appearance, opening the scoring in a 3–0 win against Shrewsbury Town.[15] On 5 April, he scored his first professional career hat-trick in a 4–3 win against Gillingham.[16]
Milton Keynes Dons
On 1 July 2014, Hitchcock joined Milton Keynes Dons on a three-year contract following his release from QPR.[17]
Fleetwood Town (loan)
On 31 October 2014, after making eight appearances for Milton Keynes Dons, Hitchock signed on loan for Fleetwood Town,[18] and scored just three minutes into his debut in a 1–0 win against Gillingham.[19] He returned to MK Dons on 5 January after making seven appearances in all competitions for Fleetwood.[20][21]
Stevenage (loan)
On 7 August 2015, Hitchcock signed for League Two side Stevenage, initially on a one-month loan[22] which was later extended.[23] Hitchcock made his debut for Stevenage against Notts County but was sent off on his debut. Hitchcock scored his first goal for Stevenage in a 1-1 away draw to Dagenham & Redbridge. Hitchcock scored his second goal for the club on 19 September 2015 in a 3-2 away defeat to Barnet before returning to Milton Keynes Dons.
Crewe Alexandra (loan)
On 23 February 2016, Hitchcock returned to League One side Crewe Alexandra on loan for the rest of the 2015–16 season.[24]
