Vidhan Bhawan (Hindi: विधान भवन) (a.k.a. Vidhan Sabha Bhawan and Assembly House) is the house of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature (both houses, upper & lower), located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India.[1][2] Built in 1928, the building was originally called the "Council House" and holds sitting of the legislature of the state of Uttar Pradesh since 1937 along with housing other important offices of Uttar Pradesh Government.[3][4][5]

History

In early 20th century, the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh used to be Allahabad. In 1922, decision was taken to shift the capital from Allahabad to Lucknow and to construct a building in Lucknow to house the Assembly Constituency. On 15 December 1922, then Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler laid the foundation of the Vidhan Bhawan.[2] Building's architecture was done by Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob and Heera Singh. Blueprint of the building was drawn by Heera Singh and the construction was monitored by Spencer Harcourt Butler.[1] The building was completed in little over five years at a cost of ₹21 lakh (US$31,000) (1922 cost not adjusted for inflation) and was inaugurated on 21 February 1928.[1][2][3]

Building

Construction of Vidhan Bhawan started 15 December 1922 and took little over five years to complete. The building is made of carved light brown sandstone from Mirzapur. Many of the inside halls, galleries and verandas are built of marble from Agra and Jaipur. Circular marble staircases run on both sides of the entrance hall and the walls of the staircases are embellished with paintings. The main chamber of the building is octagonal in shape with circular and dome shaped roof. To house the upper house, construction of the new chamber commenced in 1935 and was completed in 1937. The buildings of both houses (upper & lower) are connected by veranda with offices on both sides.[1][3]

The sitting of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly is held in the older wing (constructed in 1928) whereas the sittings of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council are held in the new wing of the building (constructed in 1937).[1][3]
