WWEL (103.9 FM, "SAM 103.9") is a radio station licensed to serve London, Kentucky. The station is owned by Forcht Broadcasting, a Forcht Group of Kentucky Company and licensed to F.T.G. Broadcasting, Inc.[2]
The station has been assigned these call letters by the Federal Communications Commission since May 21, 1979.[1] The station had been previously assigned WFTG-FM, after its sister station WFTG (1400 AM). For several years the format was country music before the format change and rebranding of the station to SAM 103.9 (shifting to Hot AC after the shutdown of the Sam FM network during the 2015 Labor Day weekend).
Previous Use of Call Sign
The call sign WWEL was originally assigned (1958) to a FM station in Chicago. It had been known as WEBH from 1958 to 1969. WEBH changed to WWEL sometime in 1969. The station broadcast "beautiful music". In 1972, the call letters went to an AM station licensed to Newton, Massachusetts and a sister FM station licensed to Medford, Massachusetts (both suburbs of Boston). This call sign was used between late 1972 and early 1979. The slogan of the FM station was "All is Well" but the call sign actually stood for Wellington Square in Medford, Massachusetts, where the studios are located. The AM station is now known as WXKS (AM) and carries Bloomberg Financial programming. The FM station became WXKS-FM (Kiss-108) and is a major player in the Boston ADI media market.
