Development
In March 2022, Variety reported that Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs were in development of and executive producing a prequel series for HBO Max with a working title of Welcome to Derry[1] that will take place in the 1960s before the events of It: Chapter One and will also include the origin story of Pennywise the Clown.[2] It received a production commitment in November 2022, and Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane were hired as co-showrunners.[3] In February 2023, the series was given the green-light and was reported that Andy Muschietti would direct multiple episodes, including the pilot, with Fuchs serving as writer.[4]
Casting
In April 2023, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige and James Remar joined the cast.[1] Additionally, Stephen Rider joined as a series regular, and Madeleine Stowe as a recurring guest.[5]
Filming
Despite the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, principal photography began in Toronto in May 2023,[6][7] and it is expected to continue through December.[8]
Release
The series is scheduled to release on Max in 2024.[9]
