“California rocket fuel” is a medical slang term for the combined administration of mirtazapine (a NaSSA) and venlafaxine (an SNRI).[1] This combination is usually used in the treatment of severe and/or treatment-resistant depression and may have efficacy superior to the MAOI tranylcypromine (though the advantage was not statistically significant in this study), with fewer side effects and better tolerability.[2] However, when used as an initial treatment, the mirtazapine and venlafaxine combination resulted in more than twice the remission rate of single antidepressant therapy with the SSRI fluoxetine.[3]
